Slingshot By Polaris-Extreme Edge of Motorcycling

17Polaris makes toys.  A lot of these toys appeal to boys from the age of about 18 to 80.  Polaris has a history of knowing what guys want even before they do.  This $3.8 billion dollar power-sports powerhouse gives its designers a lot of rope to create vehicles that tickle the imagination of toy-loving outdoor enthusiasts.  Ten years ago Polaris reinvented the off-road all-terrain vehicle market with their innovative side-by-side RZR and RANGER products.  Their line of Victory motorcycles gave cruiser riders a genuine alternative to Harley Davidson.  The new Indian line is getting rave reviews for not only being true to the original Indian brand, but introducing leading edge technology at the same time.  And this, without mentioning their award-winning snowmobiles.  Of course, women ride too, but out on the road or the trail, it seems as if there is a slightly higher percentage of men and boys on these roar-toys than women and girls.

This week Polaris is doing it again with the Slingshot.  Here is a vehicle somewhere between an Ariel Atom sports car and a Ducati GP motorcycle.  Its 3-point geometry consists of a 173-HP front-mounted engine, a single rear wheel connected to the transmission with a belt, ultra wide-stance front wheels and ground clearance just inches above the pavement.  The Slingshot exhibits super-car angularity and looks like it came off the set of a Terminator movie. With a 105-inch wheelbase and 69-inch track width, this baby is wide.  Weighing in at just under 1,700 lbs. and with just 10 lbs. for each horsepower to pull, the Slingshot accelerates like a rocket.

According to Mike Jonikas, the Polaris VP overseeing the Slingshot, it was “designed from the ground up for people with a passionate thirst for an adrenaline-filled driving experience.  It’s the perfect vehicle for those days when you crave a drive in the open air with the asphalt screaming beneath you and the head-turning exhilaration that comes from driving something incredibly unique.”

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) both classify the Slingshot as a 3-wheel motorcycle.  This means all federal and state regulations pertaining to the licensing and safety for motorcycles apply, including local helmet laws.

The Slingshot’s space-age steel frame has a sport-tuned double-wishbone front suspension with a sway bar and coil over gas-filled shocks.  Electric, power-assisted steering is designed to provide for fatigue-free driving.  ABS coupled to 298mm diameter rotors at all three wheels will slow this beast down in seconds and do it safely. Peak horsepower comes at 6,200 RPM and the rev limiter caps RPM at 7,000 RPM.

A lightweight aluminum swingarm and massive rear shock hold the rear wheel and drive train in position.  Electronic stability control helps avoid unwanted wheel spin or skidding which could be a concern in a three-wheel vehicle.  Wheel size varies slightly for each model, but are forged aluminum in front and back with custom designed, low-profile, high-performance tires.  The clutch is a single plate dry clutch, hydraulically activated and  mated to a 5-speed gearbox.  Power is delivered through the transmission and then to the rear wheel via a carbon fiber reinforced belt.

You step into the car (there is no door) and sit on race-like waterproof seats, and settle yourself into a futuristic frame with rust-proof polymer body panels.  Close proximity to the pavement amplifies the sensation of speed.  When you’re surfing down the asphalt with your backside only 11 inches off the ground, you get a whole new perspective on velocity and the true meaning of ground clearance. In a modern sports car one can quite easily accelerate down a highway onramp and inadvertently find one’s self at triple digit speeds.  Not so with the Slingshot. Here 50 mph feels like 90 and even at modest speeds you’ll find yourself grinning ear to ear while passengers raise their arms in the air as if on an amusement park thrill ride.

Available in two models, the Slingshot and Slingshot SL, both have five-speed manual transmissions. Power comes from a 2.4 liter (2384cc) dual overhead cam engine with a bore and stroke of 88mm X 98mm and variable-value timing for better fuel efficiency.  The compression ratio is 10.4:1 on the 173 HP power plant, which means you’ll be parking at the premium pump when you fill up.

The Slingshot is available in a “Titanium Metallic” paint scheme and features 17-inch wheels upfront and an 18-inch wheel in the rear.  The Slingshot SL comes in “Red Pearl” with larger 18-inch wheels in front and a larger rear wheel as well.  All wheels are forged aluminum. The SL model also includes a windscreen, integrated backup camera, and a six-speaker Bluetooth-enabled audio system — all of which can be ordered separately on the base model.

Pricing is forecast to be in the $22 – $25K range.  Polaris dealers will begin taking deposits in August with deliveries expected to begin as early as October.  Accessories include car covers, different windshields and lighting kits, smartphone mounts and a media console, and, presumably, coordinating apparel.

There are innate human reasons that convertibles, motorcycles and ATVs are so popular.  On a beautiful day there’s nothing better than the sun in your face and the wind in your hair as you experience firsthand an unforgettable urban or rural landscape.  The Slingshot is born of a recipe that is equal parts of each of these genres, with a pinch of Batmobile and F1 race car thrown in to turn heads, and I suspect buyers will love the taste of it.

HD Street Models Delayed Due To Supply Chain Issues

110713harleydavidsonstreet750harley-davidson-600xx7047-4698-31-0If you were looking to buy the new Street motorcycles – one of Harley-Davidson Inc.’s newest models expected to hit dealerships in June – you might be waiting a few more months.

The Harley-Davidson Street 750 and Street 500 motorcycles are the first all-new platform the Milwaukee manufacturer has released in 13 years. But supply chain problems with the Street caused Harley-Davidson (NYSE: HOG) to delay shipping the motorcycles, and dealerships have had a limited supply to sell.

John Olin, chief financial officer and senior vice president of Harley-Davidson, told analysts on an earnings call Tuesday that in the first half of the year the company shipped 2,200 Street motorcycles to dealers. However, most of those motorcycles are for the Rider’s Academy classes that dealers use to train new riders. Just 150 Streets have been shipped for retail sale.

The Street/Sportster motorcycle shipments made up about 20.5 percent of its motorcycle shipments in the second quarter of 2014. Overall shipments of motorcycles for the second quarter were 92,217, an increase of 9 percent. But the delay of the Street motorcycles had an impact on sales of its Sportster motorcycles, which was down double digits in the U.S., Olin said.

You’ll Never Guess Who Sturgis Picked to Lead Mayor’s Ride

lanceThe Rapid City Journal is reporting that Lance Armstrong will lead the annual Mayor’s Ride in Sturgis on Monday August 4th.  Rally officials defend their choice and say Lance deserves another chance.  “We understand the controversy that surrounds Lance, but we are willing to meet it head on. The city of Sturgis is about second chances,” said Brenda Vasknetz, Sturgis motorcycle rally director.

$35.00 each.  Click the image to order.

The annual mayor’s ride is a fundraiser for the Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department. In past year’s the mayor’s ride has included such participants as the governor, state legislators, industry professionals and a cross-section of motorcycle enthusiasts.  Lance is also an avid motorcyclist.

In the eyes of city officials, cycles are cycles and Vasknetz believes there is potential to draw visitors to the Sturgis motorcycle rally from bicycling enthusiasts.

Armstrong will also make guest appearances at the city’s rally sponsor locations around town including the Boz Bros Lot at Exit 32 and at local businesses such as Sturgis Coffee, Easyriders Saloon, The Knuckle, Loud American Roadhouse, and Mid-States Campers.

OCC BUILDS SIDE CAR CHOPPER HEARSE

OCC HearseThere are other companies out there who have built a motorcycle hearse, but none (so far as we know) that have attached it to a custom built chopper from the family that made wrench throwing an Olympic sport, the Teutels.
Forever Remembered Hearse Co., in Hellertown, PA just commissioned its third, count ‘em..three, motorcycle hearse and from none other than Orange County Choppers. Heintzelman’s other two motorcycle hearses are attached to trailers, but the newest edition features the hearse as a sidecar. It has two reproduction 1930s antique funeral lights, one in the front and the other in the back. Orange County Choppers called it one of a kind, the first motorcycle-driven hearse for the company.

Harley-Davidson Financial Services to issue refunds to Massachusetts customers

HDFSHarley-Davidson Financial Services, a division of Harley-Davidson Inc., will pay $228,000 to more than 600 consumers in Massachusetts after the Milwaukee-based financing company allegedly failed to issue proper refunds to consumers under the terms of its motorcycle finance agreements, according to a press release from Massachusetts’ Attorney General Martha Coakley.

In exchange for special loan terms, borrowers pay optional enrollment fees and when the loans are paid off early, consumers can receive a pro-rated refund of the fees. Typically, the refunds are given back to the borrowers at the dealership that helped to arrange the loan, but when dealerships go out of business borrowers have had trouble getting the refunds, according to the press release.

Under the terms of the agreement hammered out through the Massachusetts attorney general’s office, the finance company will reimburse the money owed to the borrowers and pay $25,000 to the Commonwealth for the cost of the investigation. The notices and payments are expected to be mailed out in early July, according to the press release.

The problem was isolated to consumers in Massachusetts.

Tiny Pooch Takes Down Hog

menacing dogWell…we can finally answer that age old question of “what’s he going to do with it when he catches it.”

In Riverton Wyoming,  a chihuahua has become the first dog of its breed, (at least that we know of) to successfully chase and take down a motorcycle rider.

No, it wasn’t some squid on a sport bike, or a 250 Honda Rebel, but a full size Harley-Davidson.

Yes, the smallest dog breed in the world has brought down the largest domestic motorcycle with only it’s fearsome bark and menacing scowl.

This past Monday,on Blackfoot Avenue, police were called to a incident where the owner of the motorcycle (who asked not to be identified) told officers he was driving eastbound on Blackfoot when the chihuahua ran at him and attempted to bite the front tire. He said he slammed on the brakes and the motorcycle tipped over, causing minor damage.

The word on the street was the dog tells a different story. He is saying that he grabbed the front tire and slammed the bike to the ground.  Judging by his appearance, we sort of believe him.

Mission accomplished, he assassin chihuahua then fled the scene.

A witness to the event suggested the motorcyclist might have been speeding, but refused to name the dog for fear of reprisals.  The dog’s owner was found and cited for allowing his pooch to run free.

The owner told police, “I don’t know what I’m going to do.  Last week, Killer caused the trash truck to run over a fire hydrant and he’s been shagging the neighbors Shetland pony.  He’s completely out of control.”

KIller refused to comment.

BMW rider Valerie Thompson shatters motorcycle speed record at the Ohio Mile and becomes newest member of exclusive ECTA 200 MPH Club

1Valerie1Thompson joins ECTA 200 MPH Club with fastest BMW RR in MPS/F-1000 Class with record run of 208.71 mph

Scottsdale, AZ) – June 10, 2014 – It only took 28 seconds for six-time land speed record holder and one of the world’s fastest BMW motorcycle racers, Valerie Thompson, to shatter the East Coast Timing Association’s one-mile record in the MPS/Modified Class during the recent Ohio Mile competition. Thompson piloted her BMW S 1000 RR to 208.71 mph, easily breaking the former record of 205 mph. Thompson’s new record also qualified her for membership in the exclusive ECTA 200 MPH Club while claiming bragging rights as the fastest RR in the MPS/F-1000 Class.

“Going into this event, my confidence was very high. I had just arrived from the California Superbike School held in Birmingham, the best motorcycle racing course school in the US. We made a few modifications to my BMW RR by adding new HP Race Parts provided by BMW Motorrad USA, Akrapovic exhaust systems and additional horsepower with Magic Bullet Advance Fuel Treatment. The wonderful folks at NorthStar Battery also helped us with special delivery of two of their excellent batteries, which was a great help,” said team owner and rider Thompson. “It’s a great honor and achievement to be the newest member of the ECTA’s 200 MPH Club, especially since I am only the 3rd female of less than 100 members.  I’ll be wearing my ECTA 200 MPH Club lifetime member shirt proudly,” added a smiling Thompson.

The ECTA hosts four speed trial events at the Airborne Park facility in Wilmington Ohio each year. Prior to moving to the Airborne Park location in 2012, the ECTA held the competition in Maxton North Carolina from 1995 through 2011 and was named the Maxton Mile.

Thompson and her BMW team now turn their sights on setting new land speed records at the Bonneville Salt Flats during the July speed trials. For details, visit ValerieThompsonRacing.com.
