From $18 Million a year in revenue to bankruptcy, Big Bear Choppers ends its ride

Big Bear Choppers Finished

Whether it’s a weak economy, bad management or uncooperative lenders is yet to be determined. The only thing for certain now is that the California custom manufacturer Big Bear Choppers, is filing bankruptcy and customers who have paid deposits or paid in full for bikes are demanding answers, according to a report in the Big Bear Grizzly.

From $18 Million a year in revenue to bankruptcy, Big Bear Choppers ends its ride

Disgruntled customers are lining up to demand the owners of BBC come clean. Pavel Meshcheryakov from Russia ordered two bike kits in June 2011, making full payment for $56,000. In November, Michael Forbes, marketing stopped responding to Meshcheryakov’s emails and letters.

A note on the front door at Big Bear Choppers says the company will re-open Nov. 28th after Thanksgiving, but that did not happen.

The owners, Mona and Kevin Alsop have said they will file for bankruptcy.

The Alsops have also declined to make any further statements to the press, saying their lawyer has advised them to remain silent.

Recently BBC appeared on the television show Bloomberg The Mentor saying it needed a half million dollar investment to keep it afloat.

BBC will default on a $147,000 loan (3.5% interest) from Big Bear Lake’s Improvement Agency and the First Mountain Bank’s loan of $147,000.

The company began it’s death spiral in 2009 when a bad weld on a frame caused a front fender assembly to fail, resulting in injury to an owner whose leg was amputated, and later sued the company.

At it’s zenith, Big Bear Choppers raked in $18 million dollars a year in revenue from manufacture of custom choppers, parts and accessories.

The actual number of customers who have paid for or made deposits on bikes has not been revealed at this time.

  1. I spoke to Kevin Alsop personally and after questioning his quality of builds he roared at me about how 'All American' he and his company was. How quality he was just because he was 'doing business in America.' and how anything with foreign parts 'Wasn't American'. All this and telling a paying customer to 'lick his sack' when I demanded quality craftsmanship instead of his half finished junk. I took his comments and more documentation to local editors and rallies, showing people what BBC is really like. By his own standards he's NOT an American. He's a uncharged FELON for selling a motorcycle with parts made from REAL human bones. He's clearly a thief and a liar to boot, according to everyones testimony. After what I endured in dealing with him and what that guy endured, losing his leg to BBC bad welds and lousy craftsmanship, I for one feel badly for all involved but glad to see this asshat have his 'reputation' crammed up his NON AMERICAN BACKSIDE!! ~Jessica O'Neill

  2. HELLO,
MY NAME IS JERRY WALTERS… I POSTED SOMETIME AGO MY EXPERIENCE WITH BIG BEAR CHOPPERS… AS I STATED I PAID $33,556.00 TO BIG BEAR CHOPPERS IN JANUARY 2011… I NEVER SAW A BIKE OR MY MONEY… I DID RECEIVE PART OF A BIKE IN LATE NOVEMBER OF WHICH WAS VERY RELUCTANTLY GIVEN TO ME BY KEVIN…. MANY OF THE PARTS WERE NOT GOOD AND MANY OF THE PARTS WERE NOT FOR MY BIKE….THIS INCLUDES THE WRONG DRIVE, WRONG IGNITION, A WRONG REAR FENDER AND A USED MOTOR WHICH WAS TO BE A NEW ONE…SO MY LOUSY EXPERIENCE OF LIES, DECEPTION AND THE STEALING OF MY MONEY LASTED FOR 11 MONTHS… SO, I WANT EVERYONE TO KNOW THAT AFTER 1YEAR AND 4 MONTHS MY BIKE HAS NOW BEEN COMPLETED.. IT COST ME AN ADDITIONAL $25,000.00 TO DO SO BRINGING THE TOTAL COST TO $58,000.00… IT IS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL AND A MUCH BETTER BIKE THAN IF BIG BEAR WOULD HAVE COMPLETED THE BUILD… THE PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE FOR COMPLETING THIS VERY DIFFICULT BUILD WAS AMERICAN V TWIN LOCATED IN TEMECULA, CA… I OWE MANY THANKS TO DON AND RYAN… THESE GUYS ARE SOLID PROS AND THEY HAVE SOMETHING I COULD NOT FIND IN THE MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY UNTIL I MET THEM… THAT SOMETHING IS INTEGRITY….IF YOU NEED A GREAT BUILDER, MECHANIC OR JUST A PLACE TO SERVICE YOUR BIKE, YOU SHOULD GIVE THEM A CALL…WELL LIKE EVERYONE ELSE THAT WAS TAKEN TO THE CLEANERS BY BIG BEAR, I KNIOW I WILL NEVER SEE MY MONEY.. BUT, I KNOW WE ALL WOULD LIKE TO SEE JUSTICE SERVED….. JERRY

  3. I have served in the US Army for 19 years and have been deployed to Bosnia twice, once to Kosovo, 3 times to Iraq total of 39 months in Iraq. I have a phone conversation recorded Rick Pratt saying he hopes the Alsop’s go to prison for stealing all of our money)Rick Pratt, owner of Attitude Customs, Bend Oregon (541)385-3090 located at 63003 Plateau Dr.#2 Bend Or 97701 was the dealer I went through to order my BBC Bare bones, he is a crook just like Kevin & Mona Alsop and Kevin Forbes, I will say this and my final note, “Justice Will Be Served”

  4. I paid Rick Pratt, owner of Attitude Customs from Bend Oregon $21,000 for a Bare Bones Chopper in April 2011, (he did send me back $500 because I paid $500 too much) he sent off $10,000 for my deposit to Big Bear Choppers (going through Bankruptcy) , he kept $10,500 of mine since April 2011 until my bike would be complete from BBC, I called him in Dec, he told me I should get a attorney because he googled Big Bear Choppers was going bankrupt, I was shocked, I asked Rick Pratt about my money he had from me and he said yes James I still have your money and it was a good thing he didn't sent all to BBC, then I asked how soon can I have my money and he said James I need about 30 days to get it together, Rick Pratt, owner of Attitude Choppers, Now he told me I need to get a lawyer and go through his insurance company and I said no, you just need to send me my money you have had since April 2011, then I called the Sheriff's office in Bend Oregon and they called Rick Pratt and he confirmed my story but Rick said they needed to contact his attorney because he is also considering bankruptcy

  5. I pain in full for a DA Chopper in January in the amount of $33,500.00…I got nothing but excuses and lies from employees for the next 10 months… all of my email and phone calls to Kevin and Mona were ignored… finally after some very serious demands, I got part of a bike in November….it is costing me another $20k to finish the bike…My friend Sam Parker pain in full the amount of $35,000.00 and was told by Kevin that is was not getting anything for his money… These people are liars and thieves…..

  6. I put a $10;000 deposit for a Bear Bones Chopper on 11/14/11, and was told by Mike Forbes of Big Bear Choppers upon completion of Chopper ( 4-5 Months) I would pay remaining $9,450.00 and recieve my Crate Bike.I was notified 2 weeks later they are closed, and my deposit won’t be refunded! To me that is called Fraud! I am now in contact with authorities,I just want my $ back.Jim Kreizinger.

  7. File a law suit against them for fraud. If you win they can't bankrupt on fraud. Get a class action, there are plenty of other victims and plenty evidence showing
    they committed fraud!
