Lawmakers Told That Local Communities Should Decide Land Uses

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — Supporters of H.R. 1581 — the Wilderness and Roadless Area Release Act of 2011 — told U.S. lawmakers on July 26 that the bill would allow local communities to decide the proper uses of 43 million acres of protected public land, which could include off-highway riding, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports.

But critics opposed releasing the protected land all at once. Instead, they want Congress to release the land on a piecemeal basis.

The statements were made during a U.S. House Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands hearing on H.R. 1581, the Wilderness and Roadless Area Release Act of 2011. The measure would remove the stringent use restrictions on almost 6.7 million acres managed by the federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and on 36.1 million acres of U.S. Forest Service (USFS) land that was evaluated for strict congressional Wilderness land-use designations.

A Wilderness designation is one of the strictest forms of public land management. Once Congress designates an area as Wilderness, nearly all forms of non-pedestrian recreation are illegal, including off-highway vehicle (OHV) and bicycle riding.

The AMA supports appropriate Wilderness designations that meet the criteria established by Congress in 1964, but anti-OHV forces have been abusing legislative and administrative processes in repeated attempts to ban responsible OHV recreation on public land.

The BLM and USFS have determined the 43 million acres covered by H.R. 1581 aren’t suitable for Wilderness designation, but because of various laws and rules they must continue to strictly manage the land until Congress releases it for other possible uses.

The Wilderness and Roadless Area Release Act would release the land, freeing up land managers to determine new uses, if any, such as allowing responsible OHV recreation where it currently isn’t allowed.

U.S. Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), who was joined by other lawmakers in introducing the bill, said the measure “simply acts on recommendations made by the federal government and returns the management of tens of millions of acres of public land to local communities so that more Americans can have access to our public lands.

“These communities know best how to manage the lands, whether for increased recreation, preservation or development,” he said.

U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce (R-N.M.) echoed McCarthy’s comments.

“As chairman of the Congressional Western Caucus, I am proud to be an original co-sponsor of this important piece of legislation,” Pearce said. “H.R. 1581 is good for the West and good for America. It will allow more Americans to enjoy our federal lands, and allow us to actually protect the habitats of wildlife through proper land management.”

But BLM Director Robert Abbey, who opposed the bill, testified that even though the land didn’t earn an endorsement for Wilderness designation before, it might now.

“These recommendations are now 20 years old, and the on-the-ground work associated with them is as much as 30 years old,” Abbey said. “During that time in a number of places, resource conditions have changed, our understanding of mineral resources has changed, and public opinion has changed.

“If these suitability recommendations were made today, many of them would undoubtedly be different,” he said.

The 43 million acres have been locked up for years, if not decades, even though federal land managers have noted the land doesn’t qualify for the very restrictive Wilderness designation. AMA Washington Representative Rick Podliska wondered how the land could qualify for Wilderness designation now when it was deemed unsuitable 20 or 30 years ago.

“For years, groups hoping to keep responsible off-highway riders off public land have been able to get areas earmarked for possible inclusion in the nation’s Wilderness system, which immediately bars off-highway riding, bicycling and almost all other activities while the Wilderness study is under way,” Podliska said.

“We commend Rep. Kevin McCarthy for introducing H.R. 1581, the Wilderness and Roadless Area Release Act, and Chairman Rob Bishop for holding a hearing on this bill,” he said. “The hearing illustrated why this bill is necessary and that all Americans should be able to enjoy our federal lands.

“The actions taken by the current Congress could have a profound impact on the ability of responsible off-highway riders to use public land,” Podliska continued. “It’s important that all responsible riders stay informed about Wilderness bills in Congress, and take action, when necessary, to help protect their right to ride.”

The Powersport Institute Students Build Custom Bike for AMD World Champ Competition

NORTH RANDALL, Ohio – Students from leading tech training school The PowerSport Institute (PSI) spent the last several weeks building a custom chopper-bagger style bike they named “Students’ Pride” to enter in the World Championship of Custom Bike Building competition.

The World Championship of Custom Bike Building exists to showcase and promote international custom motorcycle design and engineering quality, craftsmanship and innovation; and to promote the evolution of custom motorcycling in ways that help secure the unique enjoyment of custom motorcycles for future generations of riders.

“Students took pride in building this motorcycle, spending countless hours customizing and building the custom bike,” said Bernie Thompson, PSI campus director.  “Participating in the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building competition gives our students a chance to combine the technical training they’ve received at our school with their raw creative skills like metal fabrication and welding.”

The PSI bike will debut at the 2011 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which takes place on Main Street, Aug. 8-14, in Sturgis, S.D.  The World Championship is a free-public-admission four-day event that opens Sunday, Aug.7, with an awards ceremony at 3:00 pm MST on Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011.

IMBBA-USA Bike Show & Hall Of Fame Ceremony At The Broken Spoke Campground

TUESDAY, AUGUST 9 Sturgis, South Dakota 71st Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

(Sturgis, SD — July 22, 2011) The Broken Spoke Campground has announced that it will host the North American division of the International Master Bike Builders Association (IMBBA-USA) Bike Show on Tuesday, August 9 as part of the 71st Annual Sturgis Rally.

This will be an IMBBA sanctioned events where points will be awarded to those that participate. Builders will have the opportunity to have their bikes judged and inspected for certification and skills present in the builds. Krawiec Takes Harley V-Rod To Semi-Finals At Denver Drags

MORRISON, Colo. (July 24, 2011) –  Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines rider Ed Krawiec raced his Harley-Davidson V-Rod®  to the semi-final round of Pro Stock Motorcycle eliminations at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway. Krawiec also posted the top speed of the event at 185.84 mph. Karen Stoffer rode the Geico Suzuki to win the final round.

Krawiec qualified third for Sunday eliminations with an elapsed time (ET) of 7.258 seconds. Andrew Hines qualified the other Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines V-Rod® in sixth position with a 7.276-second run. Lucas Oil Buell rider Hector Arana led all qualifiers with a 7.240-second pass in qualifying.

In Sunday eliminations, Hines (7.316) lost in the first round to Nitrofish Suzuki rider LE Tonglet (7.285).

“Facing Tonglet in the first round was luck of the draw after he qualified in the final round, a repeat of last year’s championship and one of us was going to be disappointed,” said Hines. “I had an up-and-down weekend with my riding, and I wish I had more to show for this trip to the mountain, but we have the V-Rod motorcycles running closer to each other. Now we have to re-boot for racing near sea level at Sonoma.”

Krawiec opened Sunday’s action with a win over Suzuki Extended Protection rider Jim Underdahl in round one, and advanced in round two after Tonglet fouled at the start, leaving 0.014 second early. Krawiec faced Stoffer in the semi-finals, and lost on a hole-shot. Stoffer’s 0.002-second reaction time and 7.338-second ET was just 0.0343 quicker than the 0.049/7.325 run posted by Krawiec.

“Well, Karen did not leave much on the plate with that start,” said Krawiec. “I would have liked to be a little quicker off the line, but not a lot. We are still in a tight race, and there are a lot of points left to win.”

Stoffer defeated The Edge Suzuki rider Michael Phillips in the final.

With her win at Denver, Stoffer takes the series points lead from Krawiec. After seven of 16 scheduled Pro Stock Motorcycle events, Stoffer has 599 points. Krawiec drops to second with 566 points. Matt Smith, who lost in the first round at Denver, is third with 456 points. Tonglet is fourth with 453 points, followed by Hines in fifth position with 436 points.

The Pro Stock Motorcycles will next race when the Full Throttle Drag Racing Series stops at the 24th annual Fram/Autolite NHRA Nationals, July 29-31, at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.

CoolBeth Races To Eighth Place on I-96 Half-Mile

Mees, Smith and Johnson Fill All-Harley Podium at Lake Odessa, Mich.

LAKE ODESSA, Mich. (July 24, 2011) –  Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle® Factory rider Kenny Coolbeth raced to an eighth-place finish in the Grand National Twins main at the 11th round of the AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Flat Track Championship at I-96 Speedway. The race was won by Rogers Lake/ Blue Springs Harley-Davidson rider and Michigan native Jared Mees on a Harley-Davidson XR750 motorcycle.

“We really struggled all night with bike set-up,” said Coolbeth, who won the previous race in the series at Hagerstown, Md., and has won three times at I-96Speedway. “This track is very similar to Hagerstown and we should have been able to come in here and run fast with the same set-up, but the bike just would not handle tonight. We worked hard on suspension adjustments but couldn’t make the bike better than where we finished.”

Fast-qualifier Brad Baker put the Lloyd Brothers Motorsports/TeamHurtByAccident.com Ducati in the lead at the start of the 25-lap main on the I-96 half-mile, only to see Fasthog.com/American Harley-Davidson rider Bryan Smith get by on lap two. Mees got a bad start but worked his way into the lead by lap four, and then built a cushion of about 1.5 seconds and led to the finish. Smith settled into second place with Zanotti Racing /Schaeffer`s Harley-Davidson rider Jake Johnson right on his wheel in third place. Series points lead Sammy Halbert, on the Kings Kustom/White’s Harley-Davidson XR750, ran a distant fourth. Johnson was never able to find a way around Smith, and the top four rode the final 20 laps in this formation. Mees led Smith by 1.66 seconds at the finish. Coolbeth ran in eighth place for most of the race.

Johnson won the four-lap Dash for Cash bonus sprint.

With the win, Mees jumps from third to second place in the season standings, and now trails Halbert by just three points. After 11 of 21 rounds in the 2011 AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Flat Track Championship, Halbert has 206 points, Johnson 203 points and Smith 197 points. Coolbeth is fourth with 176 points.

The next race on the AMA Grand National Twins schedule is July 30 on the Cal Expo Fair Mile in Sacramento, Calif.

Summary: Kawasaki is recalling certain model year 2011 Ninja ZX-10R/ZX-10R ABS (ZX1000JBF/KBF/KBFL) motorcycles. It is possible for a portion of the wiring harness to become pinched between the rear subframe and the bolt holding the seat cover. This can damage the harness and wiring and result in a short between wires and the frame or within wires, which could result in the engine stopping suddenly.

Consequence: If the motorcycle stalls while being  ridden, there could be a crash resulting in injury or death.

Remedy: Dealers will repair the motorcycle as necessary, and reroute the main harness; free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule. Owners may contact Kawasaki consumer services department at 1-866-802-9381

Sauk City, WI Freedom Ride Brings in Over 1,400 Motorcyclists and $80,000 for MDA

SAUK CITY, Wis., July 22, 2011—The roads of southern Wisconsin roared with the sound of 1,000 motorcycles last weekend at the 26th Annual MDA Freedom Ride.

Nearly 1,400 motorcycle enthusiasts rallied together July 15-16 for the 70-mile ride to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The two-day event, which raised nearly $85,000 for local MDA clients, began Friday with festivities including a Poker Run, family activities, bike show, dinner and entertainment at VFW Park in Prairie du Sac.

Local MDA clients and their families cheered on the riders with homemade signs of encouragement and thanks as the motorcycles departed from Sauk Prairie Harley-Davidson Saturday afternoon. Clients included Joseph and Ethan Tress, 6 and 1 of Middleton; Annie Heathcote, 12 of Mazomanie; and Andella Armaza, 2 of Madison.

Peggy Nied, along with her daughter and grandson, attended the MDA Freedom Ride to see the riders off in memory of her son, Kyle. Kyle, 23, of Madison, had Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and passed away of late last month. According to Peggy, Kyle would have wanted to be there to support the Freedom Ride.

After the ride, many of the children and their families stayed to talk with the riders and thank them for their contribution to MDA. All of the money raised at the Freedom Ride helps clients like Joseph, Ethan, Annie and Andella by financing UW Hospital clinic visits, wheelchair and leg brace repairs, support groups, and a weeklong stay at MDA Summer Camp in Kenosha County.

Riders enjoyed post-ride activities at VFW Park, including a pork chop dinner, bike games, raffles, drinks and entertainment by LUBE. Carol Thompson of Mount Horeb won the grand prize at the raffle and will enjoy a 4-day trip to Las Vegas to see the 2011 MDA Labor Day Telethon.

It has been over a decade since Sacramento race fans have witnessed the non-stop action packed racing of AMA Pro Flat Track.  Featuring the nation’s top two-wheeled flat track riders, fans will be treated to an unmatched spectacle as riders fly down the Sacramento Mile, pitch their bikes sideways and slide through the turns.  There is no such thing as pacing in this type of racing…it is all or nothing…with only one rider emerging as the winner.

Not only will this race pit rider against rider, but it will also pit machine against machine.

Harley Davidson, Honda, Aprilia, BMW, Buell, Ducati, Kawasaki, KTM, Suzuki, Triumph and Yamaha all offer AMA approved models.

Gates open at 1:30 pm.  Riders will run practice in the afternoon with open ceremonies taking place at 6:30 pm.  Racing begins at 7:00 pm.  A special autograph session will be held immediately following the last practice.  Fans can meet their favorite riders, take pictures and get autographs.

Advance ticket prices are $85 for the Turf Club, $75 for the Legends Club House, $65 for Box Seats and $50 for Reserved Grandstands.  All tickets are $10 more at the gate.  All tickets also include same day admission to the Fair.
