Deb “Tiger” Chandler Freedom Fighters Hall of Fame – Deb “Tiger” Chandler has been an active part of the motorcycling community for over 40 years.  In partnership with the Colorado Confederation of Clubs (CCOC), she assumed the role of Colorado Commander of the Coalition of Independent Riders – a registration of independent riders.  Tiger has worked tirelessly through the state legislature to address issues of importance to motorcyclists in Colorado including funding for beginning rider training and alcohol interlocking devices for motorcycles.  She has also been instrumental in implementing a Biker Day at the Capital in Colorado as a means of opening dialog between bikers and legislators.

Clyde Fessler – During his 25 year career at the Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Clyde Fessler played an integral role in the turnaround of the company.  He served in multiple marketing positions including,  Director of Marketing, Vice President of General Merchandise, Vice President of Motor Accessories,  and Vice President of Business Development.  He was responsible for many innovative programs, policies, products, and marketing strategies that made Harley-Davidson one of the most recognized brands in the world.  Since his retirement in 2002, Fessler has remained active in motorcycling as a member of the Hamsters Motorcycle Club.  He recently wrote a book, “Rebuilding the Brand” and now travels extensively as a Keynote Speaker.

Jesse Jurrens – Legend Suspensions began in 1998 when Jesse Jurrens recognized the benefits an air spring could have on motorcycles and sought to develop the technology for Harley-Davidson Softail Chassis. Eventually being convinced, Gates™ Rubber Company, the leader in air spring technology, agreed to lend their patented Kevlar impregnated rubber air spring technology to the fledgling South Dakota start-up.  Since that time, Jesse has continued to develop innovative suspension systems.  Today, Sturgis South Dakota based Legend Suspensions manufactures Aero Air Suspension systems and Revo coil suspension systems for all Harley-Davidson models and Off-road UTVs.  Legend Suspensions are available world-wide providing a smoother ride with “on the go” adjustability, increased vehicle capability and versatility.  The Offroad systems are used by the U.S. Military and countless fire and rescue operations.  Legend has become known for its innovative quality products, Lifetime Warranty, and outstanding customer service.  The company is a recognized leader in suspension technology.

Jay “Lightnin’” Bentley – From the time he was a teenager, Jay Lightning rode in a motordrome owned by Pappy Boudreaux – first part-time and later full-time.  Early on, Jay rode Harley Hummers as a straight rider, but soon graduated to trick riding on the wall on Indian 101 Scouts.  By 1998, Jay took out a loan against his home to purchase wood and equipment to begin building what would become the American Motor Drome Wall of Death.  Completed in 2000, it was the first of its kind to be built in over 50 years.  For the past 14 years, the American Motor Drome has toured the country full-time.  Besides keeping the drome running, Jay collects classic motorcycles and wall bikes that he displays as part of the traveling show.

Keith Terry – An avid motorcyclist since he was 15, Keith Terry’s career actually started in the automotive industry, after which he operated a company that promoted bicycle motocross races.  In 1994 Keith built his first custom motorcycle, and he’s been building them ever since.  Keith and his wife Fran have owned Terry Components, the largest supplier of motorcycle starter motors and battery cables in the industry for 20 years.  More recently, Keith – along with Chris Malo – started Baggster LLC, a company that manufactures custom conversion kits for Harley-Davidson applications. For the last three years, Keith has been in charge of the Buffalo Chip Challenge working with Sturgis Brown High School students to build a custom bagger that is auctioned at the Legends Ride each year.

Bonnie Truett Ask anyone in the drag racing world about who’s had a broad impact on the sport and Bonnie Truett’s name will likely come up.  Bonnie started racing in the 1960s, and was constantly working to get more out of his drag bikes.  He started by changing the flywheels in his own Sportster, but eventually he and his partner Paul Osborn started to create and manufacture their own flywheels, frames, cams, cylinders and rods.  Bonnie continued to race until 1984, and he and Paul continued to run Truett and Osborn together until his retirement in 1997.  Following his retirement from racing, Bonnie helped his son Scott who is a four time champion in Pro Drag class in AHDRA. Bonnie is well known to everyone in the drag racing world as a friend, mentor and all around good guy.

Paul Yaffe – For over 20 years, Paul Yaffe has created custom motorcycles, working on as many as 12 commissioned bikes in any given year.  Many a Paul Yaffe Original has graced the pages of motorcycle magazines in the U.S. and abroad.  As part of his creative process, Paul often engineers new and exciting parts for one of his custom creations.  Often those parts are in demand from others in the custom-bike building world.  So, Paul created his Bagger Nation brand of custom parts and accessories for touring motorcycles.  Paul’s contributions do not end with the motorcycle industry, though.  He’s well-known as an advocate and fundraiser for children’s charities both in Phoenix and in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Key West Poker Run Evolves into Key West Bike Week

2013 Early Poker Run Photo Phil, Char, Ace, ButchPhil Peterson’s Key west Poker Run started some 41 years ago as just an idea to drum up some business during a normally slow time of year for his motorcycle business in Miami and Key West. Phil thought  if he had a Poker Run to Key West in August and made an event of it, that would do the trick.  Phil and a handful of local motorcycle riders, mostly from the Mustang Motorcycle Club decided to try it. The Run started early Saturday morning with sign up at the Miami Store, a ride to Key West  hitting five restaurants or bars to draw a card and arriving in Key West in time to get cleaned up for the Awards Dinner, Dance and Bike Show.  The best hands would win prizes and as an added attraction they had a Best Dressed Contest (where riders and their passengers would wear matching boots, pants and shirts with their helmets panted to match their bikes) so not only was the bike judged but also the riders we judged for the best looking couple and they were awarded  trophies. On Sunday morning they would have a Field Meet showing off their rider skills and scored for different events i.e. slow race, roll a barrel with your front tire, ride over the teeter-totter plank etc. Competing for trophies) In those days there where small well organized riders clubs with  a lot of camaraderie and friendly competition between clubs. Everyone would return home on Sunday afternoon and this went on for many years in the early days of the Poker Runs.

Today the Poker Run has grown into a major event with police estimates of ten to fifteen thousand riders. In the recent years it has managed to sell out all of the Key West Hotels with more and more riders staying on nearby Islands and traveling into Key West for the day or party that they want to attend. Drew Peterson, Phil’s son, now manages and promotes  the Poker run and believes another way that we can grow this event is to make it a Key’s Bike Week with a Key West Poker Run. So this year the plan is to have motorcycle rides, events and attractions  throughout the Upper and Middle Keys to attract riders to come and stay for the Week and Island hop. There are thousands of hotel rooms and places to stay thought-out the upper and middle keys.  The idea is to ride down and ride all over the Keys for the first three or four days and enjoy many of the things you can do like, snorkeling or dive trips, fishing and fishing trips, kayaking, jet skiing, para-sailing  and of course enjoying Paradise while eating, drinking and shopping. Then there is the Poker Run which will start one day earlier this year on Thursday.  Poker Run stops will open on Thursday morning when the first stop Gilbert’s Resort in Key Largo opens at 9am. The run ends on Saturday at 5 pm in Key West at the last stop which is the Conch Republic. So far all of the first four stops Gilbert’s on Key Largo, Post Card Inn on Islamorada, The Island Fish Co on Marathon and Boondocks on Ramrod Key plan on having special events and parties all week long with each of them having one big party day in that week. You will find all of the hotel accommodations listed by mile marker and rates with phone numbers and e-mail addresses for all of the Keys by visiting Petersonsharley.com and clicking on the Poker Run link.

Leann Tweets; “I might be having a perfect day.”

Leanne Rimes and Eddie Cibrian

Say what you want to about the paparazzi, but if were not for their tireless efforts, the rest of America would never get to see that even famous singers can be just as down to earth as the rest of us.  Photographers out on the left coast caught sight of singer LeAnn Rimes and actor husband Eddie Cibrian as they cruised with a group of friends to grab a cold beer and enjoy a warm California Sunday afternoon.   More pics

Motorcyclists Block California Freeway For Proposal Stunt

Call it what you want to but you gotta admit Hector “Tank” Martinez’s marriage proposal was a bit over the top.  The California sportbike rider and member of the 710 Bikerz and 300 of his friends blocked the I-10 freeway in West Corvina on Sunday January 27th while Martinez, did a quick burnout (with pink smoke)  took off his helmet, got down on one knee and  proposed to his girlfriend Paige Hernandez.

According to published reports, the California Highway Patrol isn’t very romantically inclined and issued citations to about 20 motorcyclists who were hanging around on the surface streets after the incident.

One CHP officer said others involved in the stunt may be charged as well.  Potential charges could range from various misdemeanors to felonies for impeding traffic, according to CHP Officer Jose Barrios.

“It’s a public safety issue as well,” Barrios said. “Reckless driving, stopping when it’s not an emergency stop — just a few of the violations they were committing at the time.”

If the CHP follows the same procedure it did when the members of the rock group Imperial Stars shut down the 101 Freeway in October of 2010, Martinez will likely face some type of felony charges.

Oh, and Hernandez said yes.

Multi-Talented Soccer Star Show Texting and Riding Skill

Beckham is “bending” the rules..
Image: Splash

Who needs two hands on the handlebars?  Certainly not David Beckham, who was photographed by Hollywood paparazzi on his custom motorcycle recently in Mailbu California checking his cell phone in traffic. The 37 year old dad, who’s wife, Victoria, gave birth last year to their infant daughter Harper was reportedly checking his text messages, but that’s not clear from the photograph.  What is evident is Beckham is violating California (as well as his native Austrailian) road rules by using a hand held mobile device while operating a motorized vehicle.  But, we won’t tell if you don’t.

have you ever checked your cell phone while operating a motorcycle? Take the poll and confess…

Wynonna Judd’s Husband Loses Leg in Motorcycle Accident

Wynonna Judd‘s husband and drummer Michael Scott “Cactus” Moser‘s left leg was amputated above the knee following a motorcycle accident on Saturday in South Dakota.  According to published reports the couple was riding separate motorcycles on US Hwy 16 near Deadwood SD when Moser crossed the center line and rammed into the side of Chevy Malibu traveling in the opposite direction.

Judd was riding just ahead of Moser and was not involved in the accident.

The leg was severed at the scene and doctors in Rapid City performed the surgery. He also underwent surgery to his hand.

Moser was cited for crossing the center line and not having a license to operate a motorcycle.

In a statement posted at Wynonna.com, the couple expresses their appreciation for “all of the quick medical and police responders as well as the hospital staff and well-wishes from family, friends and fans.” Judd said, ”Cactus is a champion. I love him deeply and I will not leave his side,” she said in a statement Saturday.

The couple were married in June at Judd’s Nashville home.  Judd has canceled her concerts for the next week as a result of the accident.
