Krawiec Takes Harley V-Rod To Semi-Finals At Denver Drags

MORRISON, Colo. (July 24, 2011) –  Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines rider Ed Krawiec raced his Harley-Davidson V-Rod®  to the semi-final round of Pro Stock Motorcycle eliminations at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway. Krawiec also posted the top speed of the event at 185.84 mph. Karen Stoffer rode the Geico Suzuki to win the final round.

Krawiec qualified third for Sunday eliminations with an elapsed time (ET) of 7.258 seconds. Andrew Hines qualified the other Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines V-Rod® in sixth position with a 7.276-second run. Lucas Oil Buell rider Hector Arana led all qualifiers with a 7.240-second pass in qualifying.

In Sunday eliminations, Hines (7.316) lost in the first round to Nitrofish Suzuki rider LE Tonglet (7.285).

“Facing Tonglet in the first round was luck of the draw after he qualified in the final round, a repeat of last year’s championship and one of us was going to be disappointed,” said Hines. “I had an up-and-down weekend with my riding, and I wish I had more to show for this trip to the mountain, but we have the V-Rod motorcycles running closer to each other. Now we have to re-boot for racing near sea level at Sonoma.”

Krawiec opened Sunday’s action with a win over Suzuki Extended Protection rider Jim Underdahl in round one, and advanced in round two after Tonglet fouled at the start, leaving 0.014 second early. Krawiec faced Stoffer in the semi-finals, and lost on a hole-shot. Stoffer’s 0.002-second reaction time and 7.338-second ET was just 0.0343 quicker than the 0.049/7.325 run posted by Krawiec.

“Well, Karen did not leave much on the plate with that start,” said Krawiec. “I would have liked to be a little quicker off the line, but not a lot. We are still in a tight race, and there are a lot of points left to win.”

Stoffer defeated The Edge Suzuki rider Michael Phillips in the final.

With her win at Denver, Stoffer takes the series points lead from Krawiec. After seven of 16 scheduled Pro Stock Motorcycle events, Stoffer has 599 points. Krawiec drops to second with 566 points. Matt Smith, who lost in the first round at Denver, is third with 456 points. Tonglet is fourth with 453 points, followed by Hines in fifth position with 436 points.

The Pro Stock Motorcycles will next race when the Full Throttle Drag Racing Series stops at the 24th annual Fram/Autolite NHRA Nationals, July 29-31, at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.

CoolBeth Races To Eighth Place on I-96 Half-Mile

Mees, Smith and Johnson Fill All-Harley Podium at Lake Odessa, Mich.

LAKE ODESSA, Mich. (July 24, 2011) –  Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle® Factory rider Kenny Coolbeth raced to an eighth-place finish in the Grand National Twins main at the 11th round of the AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Flat Track Championship at I-96 Speedway. The race was won by Rogers Lake/ Blue Springs Harley-Davidson rider and Michigan native Jared Mees on a Harley-Davidson XR750 motorcycle.

“We really struggled all night with bike set-up,” said Coolbeth, who won the previous race in the series at Hagerstown, Md., and has won three times at I-96Speedway. “This track is very similar to Hagerstown and we should have been able to come in here and run fast with the same set-up, but the bike just would not handle tonight. We worked hard on suspension adjustments but couldn’t make the bike better than where we finished.”

Fast-qualifier Brad Baker put the Lloyd Brothers Motorsports/TeamHurtByAccident.com Ducati in the lead at the start of the 25-lap main on the I-96 half-mile, only to see Fasthog.com/American Harley-Davidson rider Bryan Smith get by on lap two. Mees got a bad start but worked his way into the lead by lap four, and then built a cushion of about 1.5 seconds and led to the finish. Smith settled into second place with Zanotti Racing /Schaeffer`s Harley-Davidson rider Jake Johnson right on his wheel in third place. Series points lead Sammy Halbert, on the Kings Kustom/White’s Harley-Davidson XR750, ran a distant fourth. Johnson was never able to find a way around Smith, and the top four rode the final 20 laps in this formation. Mees led Smith by 1.66 seconds at the finish. Coolbeth ran in eighth place for most of the race.

Johnson won the four-lap Dash for Cash bonus sprint.

With the win, Mees jumps from third to second place in the season standings, and now trails Halbert by just three points. After 11 of 21 rounds in the 2011 AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Flat Track Championship, Halbert has 206 points, Johnson 203 points and Smith 197 points. Coolbeth is fourth with 176 points.

The next race on the AMA Grand National Twins schedule is July 30 on the Cal Expo Fair Mile in Sacramento, Calif.

Angel Winged Rider Kathy

American Woman Riders would like to thank Don Bunna for sharing his love of his Angel Kathy with us.

When I ride now she’s also my Angel watching over me and I’m glad she’s on my shoulder. Thank you Don!

My beautiful wife Kathleen Lyons-Bunna and I had been planning to ride the Blue Ridge Mountains for 6 months. We had both bikes packed. Kathy rides a 2010 Heritage. We had plans on staying in Tulsa for Friday night & heading out bright & early Saturday with the sunrise, down US 412 into AR.

Just before Stroud, a massive storm rolled out of nowhere & I couldn’t see anything in front of us.  As Kathy had much less seat time than I, I felt the only safe thing was to pull onto the shoulder and wait out the heavy downpour.   We left our flashers on, dismounted, stood in back of our bikes & spent the next 7-10 minutes holding hands and joking.  At one point I said a particular joke, she countered with one of her own. We broke out into laughter. I bent down to kiss her.

We had our shields half way up and after releasing the kiss; I looked out of the corner of my right eye & saw a car with bright head lights coming directly at us. It was driving on the shoulder of the road, at a very high speed. As I went to grab Kathy & push her & me to safety, the driver thought of reacting identically & at the same moment, swerving to avoid hitting us, but ultimately hitting both of us.  Kathy took the brunt of the impact & began riding her new Iron Horse instantly into Heaven.  I was spared; don’t know how to this day & I came away with injuries that would heal quickly.  In determining later what may have happened, it seems this was a horrendous twist of fate & some irresponsible driving on the part of the driver.

Kathy & I met 3 years ago on match.com & on our first date I explained to her how important riding was in my life. She told me she had been thinking about learning how to ride herself.  An HR executive, well known in the OKC area, she was always about being in control of her life; so she took the beginner’s class at OKRiders & we got her a 2005 Honda Shadow to learn on.  She graduated up to a 1200 Custom Sportster & traded up for her dream bike, a 2010 2Tone Pearl Blue/Pearl Purple Heritage.  At first I thought she was learning how to ride just to be with me but, no, she was feeling it in her soul and looking forward to seeing the Blue Ridge Mountains.  She asked me 1 week before we left, what was the one thing I was truly looking forward to on our vacation.

I told her…to see your smile, from ear to ear, the moment you gaze your eyes on the Blue Ridge Mountains.  I told her I had seen them already, in a cage, but still had seen them, but my one greatest moment was going to see her smile when she finally saw the Majesty of the vast & beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. My wife Kathy has always been competitive in everything she did. Well, before I could get her there to see the majestic rolling mountains, she got an aerial view from Heaven.Kathleen was an HR exec. at a financial institution, here in OKC & had been very active for many years in the Oklahoma State and the Oklahoma City HR Society. We were married on October 9th. We had within our new home, us, an 11 year old special needs son & a 16 year old son trying hard to get through high school. Although, I can say, we had a couple husband/wife differences since we’d been together & we both had previous marriages that didn’t work. We knew from almost the very beginning we were soul mates.  We used to tell each other, we may not be perfect people but we’re just perfect for each other.

I will love her forever & will cherish her & her memory forever.  Including the family she picked up from me, we had a total of 8 children, ranging from 35-11 & at the time of her bike ride into Heaven, 5 grandchildren.  The sixth grandchild was born 2 days after Kathy’s funeral. They say when one angel leaves to travel to Heaven they make way for another angel here on earth.

Our bikes ended up in perfect condition, never touched by the driver and the car.  It has taken me awhile, but I’m starting to feel my soul and her’s while riding. You never REALLY know when your last day on this earth will be.

Note from Tina : When I read Don’s story about his love for Kathy it made me really think about not taking any day for granted and that we need to not forget our friends and loved one that have gone before us and are now Angels. American Woman Riders is making a Tribute Page to those Angels watching over us. Angel Kathy is the inspiration for this Tribute Page and will be our first Angel Winged Rider.

Rare Aermacchi/Harley-Davidsons Headed to AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days Featuring Kawasaki, Marque of the Year

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The list of rare and historically significant Aermacchi/Harley-Davidson motorcycles that will be on display at this year’s AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days featuring Kawasaki, Marque of the Year, continues to grow, with a championship winning RR 250 heading the bill for the July 22-24 event at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

“We’ve got some great bikes,” said John Basore of the Aermacchi-based group that is serving as this year’s AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days Classic Club. “I’ve probably got one of every racer Aermacchi ever had lined up.”

Every year at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, the Classic Club display rounds out an exciting experience for vintage fans, many of whom will be attending to honor Kawasaki as the Marque of the Year. Aermacchi Harley-Davidsons, sold in the 1960s and ’70s, were the result of a unusual partnership between the quintessentially American motorcycle company and a small-bore Italian bike brand that introduced thousands of new riders to the Harley-Davidson name.

“At the time, Aermacchis may have seemed like an unusual choice to put in Harley-Davidson dealerships,” Basore says. “But the fact is that, when AMF bought Harley-Davidson, it allowed Aermacchi to win world championships for the Harley-Davidson Motor Co. That’s most impressive.”

The RR250 is a water-cooled two-stroke, twin-cylinder roadracer with a cassette transmission, an eccentric swingarm adjuster, dual front disc brakes and a full fairing. “It was comparable in every way to the best Yamaha of that time period,” Bashore said.

In addition to the RR 250, bikes planned for display include: a 1965 250CR, a ’65 250CRTT, a ’67 250H, a ’69 350SS, a ’70 350SS, a ’76 SS250, a ’78 MX 250, a ’73 SR100 and an all-original 1961 250C Sprint-one of the first models imported.

AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days will also feature other activities celebrating Kawasaki as the 2011 Marque of the Year. These include displays, demo rides, seminars and autograph signings. Grand Marshal Jeff Fredette, a multi-time national and international off-road champion, will be on hand to reminisce and sign autographs, as well as compete in several vintage racing classes. Enthusiasts will also have an opportunity to win a new Kawasaki Z1000 and a classic Z1, given away together in a single raffle that benefits the Motorcycle Hall of Fame.

Held at the world-class Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days includes vintage and post-vintage competition in motocross, trials, hare scrambles, roadracing and dirt track. The three-day event will also feature North America’s largest motorcycle swap meet, bike shows, demo rides of current production bikes, motorcycling seminars, the new product Manufacturers’ Midway, and club corrals featuring marque and regional clubs.

Proceeds from AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days benefit the Motorcycle Hall of Fame, which is located on the campus of the AMA in Pickerington, Ohio. The mission of the Hall of Fame is to celebrate, elucidate and preserve the rich tradition of motorcycling in America. Its exhibits honor the distinguished men and women whose competitive spirit, passion, vision and entrepreneurship have played a vital role in shaping the sport, lifestyle and business of motorcycling. For more information, call (614) 856-2222, or visit the Hall of Fame’s website at MotorcycleMuseum.org
