Rare Aermacchi/Harley-Davidsons Headed to AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days Featuring Kawasaki, Marque of the Year

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The list of rare and historically significant Aermacchi/Harley-Davidson motorcycles that will be on display at this year’s AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days featuring Kawasaki, Marque of the Year, continues to grow, with a championship winning RR 250 heading the bill for the July 22-24 event at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

“We’ve got some great bikes,” said John Basore of the Aermacchi-based group that is serving as this year’s AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days Classic Club. “I’ve probably got one of every racer Aermacchi ever had lined up.”

Every year at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, the Classic Club display rounds out an exciting experience for vintage fans, many of whom will be attending to honor Kawasaki as the Marque of the Year. Aermacchi Harley-Davidsons, sold in the 1960s and ’70s, were the result of a unusual partnership between the quintessentially American motorcycle company and a small-bore Italian bike brand that introduced thousands of new riders to the Harley-Davidson name.

“At the time, Aermacchis may have seemed like an unusual choice to put in Harley-Davidson dealerships,” Basore says. “But the fact is that, when AMF bought Harley-Davidson, it allowed Aermacchi to win world championships for the Harley-Davidson Motor Co. That’s most impressive.”

The RR250 is a water-cooled two-stroke, twin-cylinder roadracer with a cassette transmission, an eccentric swingarm adjuster, dual front disc brakes and a full fairing. “It was comparable in every way to the best Yamaha of that time period,” Bashore said.

In addition to the RR 250, bikes planned for display include: a 1965 250CR, a ’65 250CRTT, a ’67 250H, a ’69 350SS, a ’70 350SS, a ’76 SS250, a ’78 MX 250, a ’73 SR100 and an all-original 1961 250C Sprint-one of the first models imported.

AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days will also feature other activities celebrating Kawasaki as the 2011 Marque of the Year. These include displays, demo rides, seminars and autograph signings. Grand Marshal Jeff Fredette, a multi-time national and international off-road champion, will be on hand to reminisce and sign autographs, as well as compete in several vintage racing classes. Enthusiasts will also have an opportunity to win a new Kawasaki Z1000 and a classic Z1, given away together in a single raffle that benefits the Motorcycle Hall of Fame.

Held at the world-class Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days includes vintage and post-vintage competition in motocross, trials, hare scrambles, roadracing and dirt track. The three-day event will also feature North America’s largest motorcycle swap meet, bike shows, demo rides of current production bikes, motorcycling seminars, the new product Manufacturers’ Midway, and club corrals featuring marque and regional clubs.

Proceeds from AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days benefit the Motorcycle Hall of Fame, which is located on the campus of the AMA in Pickerington, Ohio. The mission of the Hall of Fame is to celebrate, elucidate and preserve the rich tradition of motorcycling in America. Its exhibits honor the distinguished men and women whose competitive spirit, passion, vision and entrepreneurship have played a vital role in shaping the sport, lifestyle and business of motorcycling. (ASMI). Many of the TTRR’s have been week long events that have taken the group across country to New York City, Niagara Falls, North Carolina, and New Hampshire to name a few. About Tommy Thompson’s Reunion Ride
Tommy Thompson started a motorcycle ride in 1994 to promote tourism in Wisconsin. He continued to host annual week long rides which left the boundaries of the state in 1998 until 2001 when he left his position as Governor of Wisconsin (after serving for 14 years, the longest tenure of any Wisconsin Governor). After serving 4 years as secretary of health and Human Services for the Bush administration Tommy entered public life and works for the Aiken Gump law firm in Washington D.C. overseeing healthcare interests worldwide. Tommy rides a Harley Davidson Ultra Classic and a Harley Fatboy.

About Accident Scene Management, Inc (ASMI)
ASMI was established in 1996 and in 1998 became a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing injuries and fatalities to motorcyclists. ASMI teaches a class called “A Crash Course for the Motorcyclist” in order to teach motorcyclists how to help each other in the event a rider is injured. The most likely person to be at the scene of a motorcycle crash is another motorcyclist and the first 5-20 minutes after a crash are the most critical so it stands to reason that training motorcyclists what to do at a crash is imperative. ASMI sees its role with reducing injuries and fatalities to motorcyclists as being similar to the role of the American Heart Association’s to reducing cardiac death through CPR. While CPR is a great way to help cardiac victim survive, CPR done on a motorcycle crash victim results in a 1% chance of survival. ASMI has trained over 18,000 students and is the leader in motorcycle trauma training in the USA. Accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and with over 140 instructors in 28 states ASMI is recently expanded to Australia. ASMI recently launched a new national program called Road Guardians that encourages motorcyclists to become Life Long Learners through a program of Resources, Rewards and Recognition.

About Women In Motion Road Guardians
Women In Motion Road Guardians were established in 2001 to host an annual fundraiser for Accident Scene Management, Inc. Over the years they have built the largest fundraiser of the year for the non-profit organization. 25 female motorcyclists work with communities, motorcycle friendly establishments and law enforcement to host a 3 day group ride that operates similar to a parade with all participants staying together as a group. The plan routes, meals, parties, auctions and gas stops along the way. The women are not a motorcycle club and have no other function than this annual fundraiser but are required to be trained. They must take traffic control training, accident scene management Basic and Advanced training and motorcycle safety training. The women come from 5 states to serve as volunteers for this cause.

Scott Cochran, show coordinator and Editor of USRiderNews said the magazine uses only IMBBA judges for the Best of the Beach shows.  ”There is $15,000 in prize money and gift certificates on the line for this show and it’s critical that we use individuals who are qualified to judge the technical correctness of the entries.  This year we had some wild entries in several categories which would have stumped amateur judges.”

Dave Enting was one of the “wild” entries with his homemade trike.  After the show, Dave praised the judging methodology used by the IMBBA.     “I wanted to  explain that “technical correctness” was the primary driving force for the design of my trike because this is what raises safety to its highest level…(Isee) what IMBBA is all about is technical correctness. I support the IMBBA 100%.

Little Sturgis Kentucky Rally Out of Gas

(editor’s note*  There is a new rally at the Union County Fairgrounds on the same weekend as Little Sturgis.  For more info, visit www.kentuckybikefest.com)

The economy has done what the lawyers could not.

It’s put the brakes on the Little Sturgis Rally and Races.

Featured on national television shows and in every major motorcycle magazine in the USA, Little Sturgis was, at one time the largest outdoor display of flesh and motorcycle eye candy in the Southeastern USA.

It was so popular, the Chamber of Commerce of South Dakota sued the Chamber of  Sturgis Kentucky claiming the small town was stealing it’s name.

Citing a drop in attendance and a huge operating loss in 2010, the Sturgis Kentucky Chamber voted today not to hold the 2011 rally, according to a well placed source.

The Chamber issued a press release that stated; “Due to various circumstances, the Board of Directors of the Little Sturgis Rally and Races for Charity, Inc cancelled its annual fundraising motorcycle event that was to be held July 14th-17th, 2011 in Sturgis KY.  The Board of Directors thanks all the volunteers and participants over the past eighteen years that made it possible to raise over $2 million dollars for various charities and educational entities.”

(added 5:30pm) According to a report in the local paper, Board Secretary Lisa Jones said that the economy and the ongoing lawsuit with Sturgis South Dakota over the use of the name “Sturgis” is the reason the rally is taking a “sabbatical” and that it may return in the future.  Both sides in the lawsuit have filed a motion to have the 2008 suit dismissed but that the suit is a “cloud” hanging over the Sturgis Kentucky chamber.

Easyrider Tour Sets Records In Early Shows

Extreme Custom Motorcycles are on display at the 2010-2011 Easyrider Bike Shows

Easyriders Events Annual Bike Show Tour wrapped up its fall tour in Atlanta, GA., on November 20th with host Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. The all new entertainment-packed bike show tour also stopped in Louisville, KY on November 13th and in Greenville, SC. on October 23rd at the Carolina First Center

Record numbers of bike enthusiasts and motorcycle fans came out to each of the three cities to see a record high 250 plus custom bikes competing for over 55 plus awards.  Easyriders Events Marketing and Entertainment Director, Tucker Kroll attributes the record breaking number of custom bike entries this year to their free space program, which gives wristband holders an option to feature their custom bikes at the show for no charge.

Easyriders Events Marketing and Entertainment Director, Tucker Kroll, said the bike show tour, “Seemed to have something for everyone and the 2011 dates look to be even bigger with our addition of Jax, the top star of the number one hit cable television show Sons of Anarchy.”  The tour drew considerable media attention with coverage from Fox, CBS, and CW network affiliates.

Matt Sorum is the world famous drummer from Guns N’ Roses, The Cult, and Velvet Revolver.  Sorum commented on his as a host saying,  “The Easyriders Bike Show Tour is as good as I’ve ever seen it this year, it has been absolutely awesome.”

Easyriders Events owner Greg Hicks recently commented, “Our goal at Easyriders Events is to bring our patrons one-of-a-kind, first quality talent and entertainment. We achieve this goal by offering our audience today’s hottest talent and attractions. Sons of Anarchy is the most popular show on TV today so what better way to reach our goals for the 2011 tour then to bring them the star of the show, Charlie Hunnam, a.k.a., “Jax”. We want our patrons to meet the most popular names in the motorcycle industry as well as in the entertainment industry at our shows.”

Another new element drawing fans to the fall bike show tour was the new 5,000 square foot, Easyriders Kids Zone Area which was hosted by Moises Arias who plays Rico who on Disney’s hit show, Hannah Montana.  Fans lined up to be photographed by world-famous motorcycle photographer Michael Lichter.  Also a big hit with bike fans was landing autographs from some of the world’s top bike builders including Paul Yaffe, The Limpnickie Lot, and Kendall Johnson.

The Roadware Fashion Show featuring The Purrfect Angelz was popular with fans as was the “Anger Management Street Extreme Lifestyle” motorcycle stunt show.  Celebrated recording and touring artists, Cowboy Mouth performed at each show. Easyriders Events Owner, Greg Hicks, added, “The second biggest draw, other than the bikes, was the chance for fans to meet Billy Gibbons or one of our other celebrity hosts.”

Other upcoming dates on the Easyriders 2011 Bike Show Tour include Charlotte, NC on January 22nd and 23rd, at the Charlotte Convention Center, and Knoxville, TN on February 5th at the Knoxville Convention Center and finishes with the Columbus, OH Invitational on February 11th-13th, 2011 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.
