Coolbeth Seventh on Factory Harley-Davidson at Sacramento

Smith Edges Carr for Win; Halbert Still Leads Series

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (July 30, 2011) –  Screamin’ Eagle® Harley-Davidson® Factory rider Kenny Coolbeth placed seventh as the AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Flat Track Championship made a thrilling return to the Sacramento Mile at the Cal Expo Center. Fasthog.com/American Harley-Davidson rider Bryan Smith won the race by just 0.042 seconds after a long battle with Chris Carr on the American Motorcyclist Association Harley-Davidson XR750. Zanotti Racing /Schaeffer`s Harley-Davidson rider Jake Johnson was third, also aboard a Harley-Davidson XR750.

Once a regular feature of the Grand National schedule, the famed “Sacto Mile” at the Cal Expo Center had not hosted a Grand National Twins event since 1999. The return of the AMA Pro flat trackers drew a capacity crowd.

Coolbeth started the 25-lap main with the lead pack, running in third position behind Carr and Johnson in the early going. Carr and Johnson opened a gap and battled back and forth for the lead, passing and re-passing on each lap. On lap 16, Smith caught the leaders and split the pair, and engaged Carr in a back-and-forth battle over the closing laps, with Johnson lurking close behind in third. Carr appeared to set up Smith for a drafting pass to the finish, but spun his rear wheel slightly coming out of turn four. Smith was just able to hold off Carr, who won the last Grand National race in Sacramento in 1999. Johnson finished third, 0.223 seconds behind Smith. Rogers Lake/Blue Springs Harley-Davidson rider Jared Mees was fourth, followed by series points leader Sammy Halbert on the Kings Kustom/White’s Harley-Davidson XR750. Coolbeth closed out the race in a battle with Brad Baker on the Lloyd Brothers Motorsports/TeamHurtByAccident.com Ducati. Baker beat Coolbeth to the line by just 0.003 seconds to take sixth place. Johnson also won the four-lap Dash for Cash bonus sprint.

After 12 of 21 rounds in the 2011 AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Flat Track Championship, Halbert has 222 points with Johnson and Mees tied for second place with 218. Coolbeth is fourth with 188 points.

The next race on the AMA Grand National Twins schedule is Aug. 27 on the Indy Mile at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis.

World’s Premier Amateur Motocross Event Set Next Week for Hurricane Mills, Tenn.

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) congratulates the nearly 1,500 qualifiers who’ve earned a start at the world’s premier amateur motocross event: the 30th Annual AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship, presented by Amsoil, at the Loretta Lynn Ranch Monday, Aug. 1, through Saturday, Aug. 6, in Hurricane Mills, Tenn.

“The AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship holds a unique place in the hearts and minds of motocross racers not just in America, but the world over,” said AMA Director of Racing Joe Bromley. “For 30 years, this event has provided amateur riders a world-class venue to showcase their skills against their peers. For some of those racers, this race will launch them on careers at the highest levels of the sport. The Powersport Institute Students Build Custom Bike for AMD World Champ Competition

NORTH RANDALL, Ohio – Students from leading tech training school The PowerSport Institute (PSI) spent the last several weeks building a custom chopper-bagger style bike they named “Students’ Pride” to enter in the World Championship of Custom Bike Building competition.

The World Championship of Custom Bike Building exists to showcase and promote international custom motorcycle design and engineering quality, craftsmanship and innovation; and to promote the evolution of custom motorcycling in ways that help secure the unique enjoyment of custom motorcycles for future generations of riders.

“Students took pride in building this motorcycle, spending countless hours customizing and building the custom bike,” said Bernie Thompson, PSI campus director.  “Participating in the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building competition gives our students a chance to combine the technical training they’ve received at our school with their raw creative skills like metal fabrication and welding.”

The PSI bike will debut at the 2011 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which takes place on Main Street, Aug. 8-14, in Sturgis, S.D.  The World Championship is a free-public-admission four-day event that opens Sunday, Aug.7, with an awards ceremony at 3:00 pm MST on Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011.

PSI, which is an official sponsor of both the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame, Inc. as well as World Championship of Custom Bike Building, offers a 9-week course as part of the American V-Twin Program that focuses on custom bike building and performance combining technical training with creativity and design elements including metal fabrication, welding and finish painting.  Students start from scratch and build a rolling chassis and frame, as well as learn how to add engine, drivetrain, transmission, wheel and suspension components and a variety of aftermarket performance parts, which are popular in the motorcycle industry.

Motorcycle Rider Breaks 300 MPH

The 300 MPH barrier on a conventional motorcycle has been broken. Bill Warner of Wimauma Florida hit a speed of 311.945 mph Sunday at the Loring Timing Association’s land speed races at the former Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, Maine.

Warner’s run aboard a turbocharged 1299cc Suzuki is the fastest speed obtained on a conventional motorcycle. Faster speeds have been recorded for so-called streamliner motorcycles, in which drivers ride inside an enclosed missile-looking device on wheels.

Warner, who is 42, says his motorcycle “is built for speed and that’s what it did.” He held the previous speed record of 278.6 mph, set last October in Texas.

Fillmore Wins AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Race at Mid-Ohio

Beck and Wyman Battle Rapp for Podium Spots

Milwaukee (July 11, 2011) – Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Racing’s Chris Fillmore posted a dominant victory from the pole position to win his third AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 race of the season at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course July 10.

 Fillmore lost the lead on a holeshot start by Steve Rapp, and battled with the Parts Unlimited rider for most of the first lap, but after passing Rapp on the second lap of the 11-lap race, he checked out to a substantial gap by the midpoint of the race and eventually built a lead of more than six seconds at the checkered flag.

“I took a look back and didn’t see anyone there,” Fillmore said.  “I expected [Rapp] to be there, so I took a couple more glances then put it on cruise control from there. I got a good launch, got through Turn 1 real well, and was kind of switching up my gearing through the race. I tried some different stuff, but pretty much had figured it out by the third lap.”

While Fillmore cruised to victory and a 30-point lead in the series standings, the racing action was more tense for the second and third spots on the podium, as Rapp began to fade back and was caught first by Michael Beck (J&P Cycles) and Kyle Wyman (Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Racing) to eventually drop to fourth place.

“I got a decent start and was just watching Rapp, [Michael] Barnes, and Fillmore out front,” Beck said. “I kept my head down, got by Barney, and saw Rapp in the distance. I caught Steve and was holding on to him, and I noticed his tires were going off dramatically. I felt like my bike was rolling, and all three of us had a pretty big battle; it was really great. Then both of them made a mistake in the Keyhole, and I was able to take advantage of it and ended up second today.”

“I made a move on [Beck] going into Turn 1–it was a tight, close one, but I got through,” Wyman said. “Then going into the Keyhole, Steve made a mistake right in front of me and I had to check up, and both guys got back past me. I just pushed as hard as I could through the second segment, which is the hardest place to pass. I knew if there was going to be a chance it would have to be coming up in Thunder Valley. I didn’t have the greatest drive, but I tried to get a run out into the inside of the Carousel, but I got out of shape and had to check up again. Then Steve made another mistake and I was able to get a run around the outside of the last corner [and get by him] by maybe six inches or so.”

Rapp finished fourth followed by Tyler O’Hara (Tyler O’Hara Racing) and Michael Barnes (Drag Specialties).

Krawiec Holds On To NHRA Pro Stock Points Lead At Route 66

Takes Harley-Davidson® V-Rod® Into Round 2 in Sunday Eliminations

JOLIET, Ill. (July 10, 2011) –  Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines rider Ed Krawiec left the O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals leading the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle series after winning one round of eliminations. Krawiec took over the series lead after winning the last event in Norwalk, Ohio, but could not build on that momentum in the heat and humidity at Route 66 Raceway.

“We still don’t have a good hot-weather tune-up for the Screamin’ Eagle V-Rod®, and that’s something we’ve been working on for a few seasons,” said Krawiec. “So we’ll keep working on it. It wasn’t a terrible outing for us. We got one win and keep the points lead.”

Krawiec qualified fifth for the event with an elapsed time (ET) of 6.988 seconds. Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines rider Andrew Hines qualified the team’s other Harley V-Rod in 11th position with a 7.029-second pass. Lucas Oil Buell rider Hector Arana Jr. led all qualifiers with an ET of 6.950 seconds.

Hines was done on Sunday after a first-round loss to VRoom Racing Buell rider David Hope. Hines ran 7.099 to 7.040 for Hope.

“My bike was struggling this weekend, and on Sunday we went back to the set-up we used for Eddie’s bike, but we were off on the tune-up,” said Hines. “We are going to stay here and test on Monday and try to find a better combination for this hot weather that we can use later this season, and then go right to Denver for the next event. We need to find some consistency.”

Krawiec opened the Sunday elimination rounds with a 7.014-second run and a win after the Suzuki ridden by Steve Johnson broke at the starting line. Krawiec ran 7.094 and lost to the 7.065 effort of Kuryakyn Buell rider Chip Ellis in round two.

Nitrofish Suzuki rider LE Tonglet defeated Ellis in the final round to win the event.

After six of 16 scheduled Pro Stock Motorcycle events, Krawiec leads the series with 485 points. Karen Stoffer, who won one round at Route 66, stays in second place with 479 points. Matt Smith moves up to third with 424 points after winning two rounds at Route 66. Hines and Tonglet are tied for fourth with 401 points.

The Pro Stock Motorcycles will next race at the 32nd annual Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals, July 22-24 at Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, Colo.

Hahn Has Something To Prove In Return To GEICO Honda Team

BUCHANAN, Mich. (June 29) — Wil Hahn made it through one practice session in the first race of the 2011 season before wrecking his GEICO Honda CRF250R hard enough to break his back. It wasn’t exactly the debut he was hoping for with one of the top teams in the sport.

Half a year later, Hahn has returned, and he’s ready to show his team owners, sponsors, and fellow riders that he hasn’t lost his desire to win and dominate in professional motocross competition. He’ll take to the track for the first time this Saturday at the RedBud National, alongside teammates Kevin Windham, Eli Tomac, Justin Barcia, and Lance Vincent.

“It’s been a long six months,” Hahn said. “It’s tough to just sit there and watch everyone else have all the fun, but there wasn’t much I could do. You have to recover and heal, listen to what the doctors tell you, and just wait for your turn. Now it’s my turn.”

Despite the long layoff, Hahn, a runner-up in the 2010 Supercross Lites West standings, said he’s ready to contend for race titles beginning in RedBud.

“I feel as though I’m completely prepared,” he said. “Physically, I’m 100 percent healthy. I’ve been riding a lot and I feel good on the bike. My conditioning is good.

 

“I want to go after the win. In my mind I’ll be a contender the moment the gate drops. Besides, I’m pretty anxious to show these guys they made the right choice in hiring me.”

Coming off a season-best, third-place overall result at the last tour stop in his home state of Colorado, Tomac is anxious for another big weekend on his GEICO Honda CRF250R that will lift him higher than his current fourth-place ranking in the Lucas Oil AMA Motocross Championship Series.

“RedBud is actually my favorite track,” Tomac said. “Everyone thinks because I’m from Colorado that Thunder Valley would be my favorite place, and I definitely like it there because I’m in very familiar surroundings, but to me nothing beats RedBud. I love the fans there and the track is just awesome.

“I feel like I’m riding well right now but I have room to improve. I was a solid third in both motos in Denver and had to ride through some traffic to get up there, but (Dean) Wilson and (Blake) Baggett were just on it. I’ve got my work cut out for me to catch those two guys, but I can definitely improve.”

Also fourth in the points, 450cc pro Windham had so much fun in Denver that he immediately decided to race this weekend in Michigan. Windham is filling in for injured rider Trey Canard on the American Honda Racing team, a sister operation to the GEICO Honda group.

“It’s tough on the sponsors and the teams when you’re indecisive on whether you’re going to ride or not so I told everyone last weekend that I’d ride RedBud,” Windham said. “I’ve had good results at the last two races and I feel really strong and in shape. I’ve able to hold my own and not get tired so hopefully we can get a podium finish soon.

“I need to work on speed now but I’m mostly happy to be racing for all the fans out there. It gets harder to race every year at my age (33), but its also hard to stay away and miss out on this and the fans. Every time the gate drops and you’re not apart of it, it feels like you are missing a piece of yourself.”

Barcia has been steaming mad since his accident-plagued outing in the Mile High City and he’s anxious to put that memory behind him with a big weekend in Michigan on his 250cc Honda.

“I’ve been riding hard this week,” Barcia said. “I wasn’t happy with anything that happened last weekend. All I can do at this point is direct my energy to RedBud and fight for a podium finish. That’s really the only thing that’s going to make me feel better.”

Rookie Lance Vincent also will compete in RedBud, giving the team four 250cc riders.

“I rode up there with the top guys for a long time in Denver until my bike stopped working,” Vincent said. “It showed me I have the speed to run with anyone. My confidence is growing each race.”

LIMA, Ohio (June 26, 2011) –  Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle® Factory rider Kenny Coolbeth placed sixth in Grand National Twins racing at the Allen CountyFairgrounds half-mile, the ninth round of the AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Flat Track Championship. The race was won by Kings Kustoms rider Sammy Halbert on a Harley-Davidson XR750 motorcycle.

Harley-Davidson rider Bryan Smith, Zanotti Racing /Schaeffer`s H-D rider Jake Johnson, Halbert and Rogers Lake/Blue Springs Harley-Davidson rider Jared Mees formed a lead pack. Those riders stayed at the front after a re-start following lap two for a red flag and a crashed rider. Coolbeth was in sixth place at the time. Smith and Halbert edged away after the re-start, with Halbert passing for the lead on lap 11 and immediately opening a gap on Smith that stretched to 1.9 seconds by lap 17. White’s Harley-Davidson rider Matt Weidman, who started the race at the back of the grid, passed Smith for second place on lap 18 and closed to within 0.654 second of the leader before Halbert made a burst on the last three laps to seal a 1.183-second victory, his third win of the season and his first at Lima. Smith was third, 6.570 seconds back, followed by Lloyd Brothers/Team Hurt by Racing.com Ducati rider Brad Baker, Mees, American Harley-Davidson rider Robert Pearson, and Coolbeth in sixth place.

 

 

“It’s sixth place but that’s better than we’ve run here in past years,” said Coolbeth, who placed 13th on the Lima half-mile in 2010. “It’s a cushion track and you’ve got to hold it wide-open. The team worked hard and the bike went OK tonight.”

 

Smith won the Dash for Cash bonus sprint race.

 

After nine of 22 rounds in the 2011 AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Flat Track Championship, Halbert leads the series with 186 points. Johnson is second with 161 points, followed by Mees with 155 points. Coolbeth is fourth with 136 points.

Krawiec Takes Pro Stock Points Lead With Win At Norwalk

Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines Team Gets Third Win of Season

NORWALK, Ohio (June 26, 2011) –  Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines rider Ed Krawiec rode a Harley-Davidson® V-Rod® to his second Pro Stock Motorcycle event win of the season at the 5th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Summit Motorsports Park. Krawiec defeated Buell rider Matt Smith in the final, and leaves Norwalk leading the Pro Stock Motorcycle class in season points.

 

“It’s great to be back on top in points,” said Krawiec. “I want to stay there for the rest of the season. I feel like I’m moving in the right direction and riding with real confidence, and the team is really working hard.”

 

Friday qualifying was rained out, leaving the field with just two runs to qualify on Saturday. Krawiec’s best run was a 6.934-second blast that put him in the fifth position. Andrew Hines qualified the other Screamin’ Eagle V-Rod in ninth place with a 6.978-second run. Lucas Oil Buell rider Hector Arana Jr. led all qualifiers with a 6.887-second run.

 

“We came to Norwalk with a plan and some new set-up ideas we wanted to try, and losing Friday really messed that up for us,” said Hines. “We needed to run more rounds to gather some data. We tried three different engines this weekend and it never ran very well. Ed’s V-Rod was great in the first two rounds on Sunday, but mine never came around. It’s very frustrating, but we’ll do some more testing at the shop see what we find.”

 

Hines lost to Varoom Racing Buell rider David Hope in the first round on Sunday, with a 7.164-second elapsed time (ET) to Hope’s 7.056.

 

Krawiec opened Sunday eliminations with a 6.919 ET that would be the quickest run of the day, good for a win over Varoom Racing/LAT Racing Oil Buell rider Mike Berry. Krawiec got a free pass in round two when Jim Underdahl did not make the start after changing engines in his Suzuki Extended Protection motorcycle. Krawiec defeated Hope in the semi-finals, and then got the win in the final round over Matt Smith after his Buell broke down mid-run.

 

“I was using my racing luck at the end today,” said Krawiec, who now has nine career Pro Stock Motorcycle event wins. “By the final the track was getting hot and greasy and the tire just spun at the start, my reaction time was not great and the bike was falling off at the end. We might have had a different result if Matt could finish the run, but I’ve been on the other end of that situation too. So it all evens out. The Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle team really battled this weekend so I’ll take the win any way it comes.”

 

After five of 16 scheduled Pro Stock Motorcycle events, Krawiec leads the series with 425 points. Karen Stoffer, whose Geico Suzuki broke at the first-round starting line at Norwalk, drops from first to second with 418 points. Hines is third with 369 points, followed by Smith with 350 points.

 

The Pro Stock Motorcycles will next race at the 14th annual O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals, July 7-10, at Route 66 Raceway, Joliet, Ill.
