GEICO Harleys Finish Strong in Birmingham, Fillmore Remains in Points Lead

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (June 19) — The GEICO/RMR racing team had its best showing of the season in the Vance & Hines XR1200 class with team riders claiming three of the top six spots Sunday at the Barber SuperBike Classic.

Series points leader Chris Fillmore scored a runner-up finish, Michael Corbino earned a career-best fifth-place result, and Kyle Wyman finished sixth.

Fillmore started from fourth position and battled it out from the first lap with eventual race winner Steve Rapp. Fillmore was on his tail the entire race but Rapp had too much for Fillmore to overtake.

“The race was very frustrating,” Fillmore said. “I was with him the entire time but I didn’t dare try and pass him. Every time I tried to push it I felt my front end get loose and the last thing I wanted to do was push too hard and crash.”

Fillmore barely missed getting tangled up in a scary crash on Lap 1 with Michael Beck. He was on the outside attempting to pass Beck when Beck’s Harley got loose.

“I don’t know how I didn’t hit him,” Fillmore said. “I had to drive into the grass there to make sure I didn’t get involved but that was definitely lucky to not get wrapped up in that.”

Corbino started the race from the 13th position and battled his way up from there.

“My plan was to get up on the outside on Turn 1 and it worked out well for me,” Corbino said. “I picked off quite a few right in the beginning then I just kept pushing where I knew I was fast and it worked out for me.

“I feel like this is the best possible Father’s Day present I could give my dad. I’m glad that I was able to earn my career best finish on Father’s Day, makes it even better than I thought it would be.”

Wyman qualified sixth and was supposed to start in the second row but things didn’t exactly go as planned.

“I can’t be disappointed since I missed the sighting lap,” Wyman said. “I had an issue with my helmet and I didn’t have it in time so I got held up, which meant that I had to start from the back. Luckily I was riding well and just picked them off one by one.”

Wyman is currently fourth in the championship points and Corbino sits sixth.

The next round of the Vance & Hines XR1200 series will be July 8-10 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

Harley-Davidson rider Bryan Smith was third, as Harley-Davidson XR750 motorcycle riders filled the podium.

This was the first AMA Grand National race to be held at Hartford Motor Speedway. Scott Powersports/Dubach Racing Kawasaki riderJohnny Lewis took the lead at the start of the 25-lap Twins main, with Mees and Coolbeth in close pursuit. American Motorcyclist Associationrider Chris Carr and Smith ran fourth and fifth about a second behind the leaders. Mees got past Lewis on lap eight and began pulling away. Coolbeth passed Lewis for second place on lap 11, but by then Mees had opened a 2.2-second gap. Lewis continued to fade, and Smith moved up to third place on lap 12. Coolbeth ran a steady pace, lapping the half-mile track at just over 24 seconds, with a best lap of 24.162 on lap 23, but Mees kept building his lead with laps in the 24.05 range and had a 4.7-second gap on Coolbeth on lap 23. Mees backed off on the last lap and led by 3.046 seconds at the finish. Smith was 4.92 seconds back, and 1.87 seconds behind Coolbeth. Carr was fourth, followed by Lewis.

“This is a great track, but it turned into a single racing groove,” said Coolbeth. “There was really just one line, so the only way to pass was to wait for the rider in front of you to make a little mistake. When Mees got by Lewis, I had to wait a few laps to make a pass and by then Jared was gone. We got on the podium and the points will tighten up, so except for missing the Dash it was a good night for the Harley team.”

Coolbeth placed third in his heat race and did not qualify for the Dash for Cash bonus sprint, which was won by Mees.

After eight of 22 rounds in the 2011 AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Flat Track Championship, Kings Kustoms rider Sammy Halbert, who placed sixth at Hartford, leads the series with 158 points, followed by Zanotti Racing/Schaeffer’s H-D rider Jake Johnson, who was eighth at Hartford, with 149. Mees moves up to third place with 141 points, and Coolbeth is fourth with 123.

The next race on the AMA Grand National Twins schedule is June 25 on the half-mile at the Allen County Fairgrounds in Lima, Ohio.

 

 

Tomac’s Overall Podium Finish a Highlight of High Point Nationals

MT. MORRIS, Pa. (June 11) — GEICO Honda Lites rider Eli Tomac found a quick way around a muddy High Point Raceway in Moto 2 to secure an overall third-place result at Saturday’s Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motorcycle Championship series stop in southwest Pennsylvania.

Tomac improved from sixth place in Moto 1 to a third-place finish in Moto 2, the best outing of the four GEICO riders in attendance. Kevin Windham went 6-5 in his two motos for a sixth-place overall ranking in 450cc competition. Justin Barcia was 8-7 for sixth overall in Lites, while fill-in rider Lance Vincent went 19-27 for 20th, also in Lites.

It took a breadth of riding ability to make it through the day as the first motos in both classes took place on a dusty and dry course. Then an intense but short afternoon rain shower soaked the facility and made the second round of motos a muddy battle of survival.

“It went from hard-packed and kind of slick in the first moto to muddy and really slick in the second moto, but I’ve always been good in the mud so it worked out,” Tomac said. “It kind of came to me. Some guys struggle when it’s wet but I like it.

“It’s nice to get on the podium. I definitely want to be on top of the podium but we’re not quite there yet. Hopefully the trend we started in Supercross will start in Motocross because once I found the podium over there I was on it every race.”

Filling in for the injured Trey Canard on the American Honda Racing team, GEICO legend Windham had a solid day on his CRF450R. But the veteran rider was expecting more.

“I felt like I’d be well on my way by this point in the season so I’m a little bit frustrated,” WIndham said. “It’s the winner’s instinct in me that just makes me want to come out here and win these things. If you’ve ever won before you know how addicting it can be. It’s why we do this and what keeps us coming back for more even when we don’t do so well.

“To hear all the cheers and feel the fan support is awesome. It’s great for Honda and GEICO as well as for me. I have had a lot of success at High Point and although we couldn’t capitalize on it today I still love this track and all the great fans.”

Barcia, who has been fighting through a viral infection over the past few days, admits he got tired during his two motos.

“I was struggling,” Barcia said. “I went out there and did my best but unfortunately my best wasn’t good enough today.

“I don’t usually feel like this and it really bummed me out. I have a bit of a bug so I haven’t been feeling my best and I really think it got to me today. I just need to go home, get some rest, and go to the doctors so we can figure out exactly what’s going on.”

GEICO Riders Fillmore, Eslick go 1-2 in XR1200 Action at Road America

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (June 5) — The Vance and Hines XR1200 class is barely more than a year old but the gang from GEICO Racing already has it figured out as team rider and points leader Chris Fillmore won Sunday’s race in the Subway SuperBike Doubleheader at Road America. Fillmore was followed closely by reigning class champion and teammate Danny Eslick, who yielded the lead to Fillmore with two turns left.

“It’s very satisfying, for sure,” said Fillmore, who edged Eslick at the stripe by .126 seconds for his second win of the year. “It was a pretty wild race. I got a good start and settled in with that front group. I’m not even sure how many of us there were up there. We all kind of passed the lead around and it was fun riding.

“About halfway through I went off the track at Turn 5 and by the time I got back out I was back to eighth or so. I just had to put my head down from there and play catch-up.

“At the end no one really wanted to take the lead because you wanted to ride the draft up the hill to the finish line but when Danny lifted up I had to just go. I think maybe I surprised him a little going by so fast but we got around that last turn and it was on all the way to the finish line. I was able to stay out front and that was important.”

As is the norm in the class, no single rider controlled the action. Instead, a breakaway group of eight pros battled throughout the seven-lap contest around the 4.1-mile course. Both Fillmore and Eslick led the race at various points, with each rider picking their favorite spots to pass, and it wasn’t unusual to see riders leapfrog three or four competitors in one motion.

“This class is turning out exactly how we had hoped,” creator and sponsor Terry Vance said. “The action is incredible every race. That’s why the fans are responding to it so favorably. I know that as more people get to know about this style of racing and the fans see it in person or on TV, it’s going to sky-rocket.”

Eslick certainly had fun, riding the freight-train draft to perfection time and again, seemingly passing at will. But the nature of the spec class is that everyone competes on the same equipment so it’s nearly impossible for a single rider to pull away.

“I could sling-shot around people in certain spots and I knew I needed to do that coming onto the final straightaway,” Eslick said. “Fillmore slipped by with a few turns left and I was planning to ride right behind him and then pull out and drag race to the finish line but he tucked in and got far enough away to take the win.

“I’m happy for Chris because he’s riding for the championship. The points are important to him and to the entire GEICO/Bruce Rossmeyer/Lucas Oil race team.”

Team riders Kyle Wyman and Michael Corbino rounded out the top 10, securing ninth and 10th place.

Up next is the Barber SuperBike Classic, which runs June 17-19 at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Ala.

 

Correction: GEICO Harley Road Racing Team Earns Two Podium Finishes in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY (May 30) — Memorial Day was certainly memorable for the GEICO/RMR Harley team in the AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Series as all four team riders finished in the top 10, including two on the podium.

Defending class champion Danny Eslick, who decided to race in the Harley-only category late last week, topped the charts with a strong second-place finish. Teammate Chris Fillmore was close behind in third, while Kyle Wyman and Michael Corbino finished eighth and 10th, respectively.

“It was cool to get out there and battle those guys on the Harley’s again,” said Eslick, who started seventh but was up to second place by Lap 4. “I just didn’t have enough for Steve Rapp up front but I’ll take a runner-up finish. I’m okay with that.” Eslick, who competes full time in the Daytona Sportbike class, only rode his XR1200 Harley one time prior to Monday’s race but he looked like a seasoned veteran in the saddle.

“Once I got comfortable I started picking guys up and was up in the top three pretty quick,” Eslick said. “I had a pretty good battle with my teammate Chris Filmore for the second half of the race. That was
fun. Then a few more guys got in there with us for a little while. There are a lot more competitive riders in the class this year and it makes it more exciting for the fans and a lot more fun for the riders.”

Fillmore, who won the last XR1200 event a few weeks ago in Northern California, started on the front row thanks to a strong qualifying effort.

“It was pretty interesting at the start,” Fillmore said. “As we were lining up it started to hail so that was interesting. I don’t think it really affected the track at all but it did mess with everyone a
little bit. We’ve dealt with so much weather this weekend I’m just glad it’s over.”

Fillmore stayed up front the entire race and even battled for the lead early in the race with eventual winner Steve Rapp, but just didn’t have enough to battle with him or Eslick in the final laps.

“Being on the podium is good,” FIlmore said. “The race was good. I did some back and forth for the lead the first half of the race, which was great, but I couldn’t hold on to the lead.

“(Rapp) got around me and then Danny and I started battling for secondhan we just couldn’t get in his draft. He built up a bit of a gap and at that point Danny and I were by ourselves, just battling it out for
second place.

“I overshot Turn 5 and Danny was able to get around me. At that point there wasn’t enough track left to catch him. I’ll take the third though. We’re up on the podium and it still gives me some points in
the championship hunt.”

Further back in the pack were Wyman and Corbino.

“I got off to a decent start considering my qualifying position,”Wyman said of his slotting in the No. 11 spot. “I was up in the middle of the pack and battling it out with some of the guys and felt pretty
good about my Harley. Then I was able to make a few moves and finish eighth. Definitely not a bad day.”

Rain had been a factor all weekend for the XR1200 riders so heading into Monday they were expecting more wet conditions but that didn’t end up being the case. The track was mostly dry except in one turn where Corbino had some trouble.

“The start went well,” Corbino said. “I was on a good pace and was in the middle of the pack from the beginning until I had a bit of a mishap in the only turn where there was rain. I ended up on the paint
and that’s not where you want to be.

“Luckily I kept it on two wheels and was able to refocus and finish the race. I just wanted to take her home safely and I did that. I’m happy with a top-10 finish. It’s good for points and for the whole
GEICO XR1200 team.”

The next stop for the AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Series will be June 5 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

 

GEICO Honda Team Survives Texas, Earns First Podium Finish of Outdoor Season

WORTHAM, Texas (May 28) — The most brutal stop on the Lucas Oil AMA Motocross Championship tour lived up to its billing Saturday as the
top riders in the world fought to survive 95 degree temperatures that scorched Freestone County Raceway.

GEICO Honda rider Justin Barcia, just a few weeks removed from his Supercross Lites championship, led his team with a runner-up result in the second moto of the day to fashion a fourth-place overall finish. Stablemate Eli Tomac also showed well, going 5-6 on the day, while new team member Lance Vincent and veteran 450cc rider Kevin Windham did their best on the severely rutted and sun-baked course.
Barcia was razor-sharp out of the starting gate in both motos, earning a pair of holeshot awards. But racing with 39 other riders proved costly in the first turn of Moto 1 as a rider clipped him from behind and knocked him off his bike, moving him all the way back to 39th place. He had to ride hard the rest of the way but somehow made it back to ninth.

Wishing to separate from the pack immediately in Moto 2, Barcia had an even better start and rode away from the field until getting passed with just two minutes left in his ride, which dropped him to second place. The points he earned on the day lifted him to sixth in the season standings.

“I just got tired at the end there,” Barcia said. “This is the hardest race of the year and you really just want to survive it. The track is so rutted and hard. The whole day I was just squeezing my bike as hard as I could to hang on.

“The first moto took a lot of effort because I got knocked way back at the start so I was charging the whole race. That caught up to me later in Moto 2. Considering this was easily the toughest ride I’ve had all year, to end the day on the podium feels good.

“I’m really happy with my bike and me and my dad have been working on my starts every day at home, just doing dozens and dozens of them. All that hard work paid off.”

Tomac was solid in both races, riding to fifth and sixth in his two motos for an overall finish of fifth place, which lifts him to third in the championship points.

The Geico Team Gets Ready Before the Race

“Just another okay round for me,” Tomac said. “A fifth and a sixth, fifth overall, not exactly what I was looking for but it wasn’t bad either. I need to get up on the podium next round. That’s the main
thing for me right now.

“I’ve trained a lot for the heat, especially thinking back to what happened last year here when it just crushed me, and although it’s still unbelievably hot, I feel like I handled it much better this time around. There’s still another level I need to reach but I’ll get there.”

New team rider Vincent, sporting No. 245 on his GEICO Honda, took 16th in Moto 1 before improving to 10th in Moto 2 to finish 13th in the overall Lites standings. Although this was his first race of the
outdoors series, he’s already in 19th place in the championship rankings.

“The track was so gnarly and the heat was just ridiculous but I managed to make it through the day and I’m not laid out right now,” Vincent said. “The team and the support they gave me is unreal. I
couldn’t ask for more. They motivate me so much.

“First moto I got a good start, maybe fifth or so, and then settled into about eighth place and was there for a good 20 minutes until I clipped a hay bale and went over the handlebars. By the time I got up
I as 16th and just rode it out. My start wasn’t as good in the second moto and I tipped over early so I was playing catch-up the rest of the way. I still ended up in the top 10, which is what I wanted, so it was
a solid day.”

Windham was frustrated by his visit to Texas, despite two fairly decent rides. He started strong in Moto 1 but his Factory Honda 450cc machine encountered some mechanical issues late in the race and he was unable to finish. He was credited with a 28th-place result. In Moto 2, he outlasted several riders that wilted in the heat and finished ninth. His 28-9 finish earned him the 17th slot in the overall
standings.

 

“We had a little mishap in the first moto and I wasn’t able to finish,” said Windham, who slipped a few spots to eighth in the 2011 rankings. “The bad part was it happened pretty late in the race so I
had spent a lot of energy. We got into the second moto and I just hit the wall. Somewhere around the 15-minute mark this Texas heat just got me.

“It’s frustrating and I’m a little embarrassed. I was late getting ready for the outdoors. It was an unexpected move and I entered Round 1 after just a few days of preparation. It was crazy to think I could
catch-up right away, especially coming to heat like this in week two. We’ve got an off weekend now so hopefully we can use the extra time to get better and have a good showing in Mt. Morris.”

Eslick Opens Salt Lake Race with Solid Qualifying Performances

SALT LAKE CITY (May 28) — GEICO/RMR rider Danny Eslick battled cold and wet Utah weather during the first day of professional qualifying for the Big M Weekend at Miller Motorsports Park. Eslick spent time on both his Daytona Sportbike Suzuki and his XR1200 Harley Saturday and was happy to get twice as much track time as usual.

“I like riding both bikes,” Eslick said. “It’s nice to be able to get out there and compete in more than one class. The extra data we gain is valuable.”

The 2009 Daytona Sportbike champion ran well during the morning practice laps and sat second heading into the opening qualifier of the weekend. Although he slowed to seventh in that round, Eslick feels confident heading into raceday.

“This morning started off well,” Eslick said. “We did what we planned by riding some of the momentum from last race here into practice but in qualifying everyone picked up the pace a little bit and we slipped back. We’re seventh but it’s so close in those top spots it’s not a huge deal.

“Plus, putting in one fast lap is one thing but putting in 16 is under race conditions is another story. We’re starting in the second row and that’s not too bad for here because there are so many opportunities to pass on this track.”

The reigning champ in the AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Series faced a very similar fate in the XR1200 class. He was the second quickest behind teammate Chris Filmore in the first practice session but rain and a slippery track caused Eslick to fall to seventh place in qualifying. The Harley is fun,” Eslick said. “I’m happy to be back on it. I wish we could have gotten up there and done a bit better but the conditions weren’t there and I didn’t want to do anything stupid.

“I’m looking forward to tomorrow. The weather isn’t looking good so we probably won’t improve on our qualifying spot but we should be able to get a solid wet weather tune-up.

“It is cool here because they let us run in the rain. It’s one of the few tracks left where we are able to run in these conditions. Hopefully we’ll find a good wet setup and I’ll feel comfortable for the main events.”

The final qualifying session for Daytona Sportbike will be 8:40 a.m. MDT Sunday followed by the race at 4:10 p.m. MDT. Final qualifying for the XR1200 Series will be at 4:45 p.m.

AHRMA Announces a “World Championship” Mini-Series

The American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) announces a new mini-series for the conclusion of the 2011 Road Racing season

The 2011 AHRMA World Championship series, a first for AHRMA, is a mini-series that will tabulate results from all road race classes for the 7th Annual Barber Vintage Festival (October 8th and 9th) and the one round of the last event of the road race season at Daytona International Speedway, the following weekend (October 14th thru 16th).

This mini-series was created to allow international riders an easy way to compete in two AHRMA nationals at two premier facilities in one easy trip. All racers must be entered for both events to be included in the final standings.

A contingent of Manx-mounted New Zealanders and several international champions have already signed up to join the AHRMA regulars as they battle for points in the 500 Premier race.

Zero Bikes Dominate Electric Class In 2011 AMA MiniMoto SX COMPETITION

Adding an interesting twist, during racing and qualifying the electric motorcycles were mixed in with their internal combustion counterparts. In an attempt to level the playing field and capture fans’ attention, race organizers handicapped the electric motorcycles by delaying their start behind the gas motorcycles by several seconds.While entertaining, the top electric motorcycle riders were so much faster than the majority of the combustion field that it caused hazards during passing that resulted in at least one incident. As riders increasingly turn to high performance electric motorcycles it will be the challenge of organizers to decide how best to integrate a new powertrain into a new racing tradition.
