WSP Police Drop BMW for Honda Motorcycles

Ninety years ago, the Washington State Patrol was formed with troopers riding Indian motorcycles. The iconic bikes were replaced in recent years with BMW motorcycles for the state’s 43 troopers that ride on two wheels. Now, those troopers are getting new rides: the WSP is switching to Honda. “I think it’s a little bit smoother than the BMW, especially at higher speeds,” said Trooper Jeff Sevigney, one of four motorcycle troopers in the Spokane region.

“It’s a little bit easier to ride,” he said.

The Honda ST 1300 PA is powered by a four-cylinder engine arranged in a “V” alignment with a five-speed transmission. The model was introduced in Europe in 2002. It has well-placed crash bars along the sides to protect the driver in case of a spill. The bike will get Sevigney in and out of tight spaces and can go where a patrol car cannot. “We are less noticeable,” he said. The 15-year veteran won’t say how fast the motorcycle will go. “Fast enough is what I tell people,” he said.

Last week, he was working traffic along U.S. Highway 195 near Cheney-Spokane Road as part of a stepped-up enforcement and safety program along that busy corridor. It didn’t take long for him to pull over a few drivers. Within a few minutes, he nailed a semitruck driver going over the limit. Motorcycle troopers typically ride from March to November. They retreat to cars during winter months. A statement from WSP headquarters said, “The Honda ST 1300 PA was specifically manufactured for law enforcement use.

“The Honda was chosen over other models because of the balance, maneuverability, acceleration, overall performance, availability of service, and lower purchase and maintenance costs.”

This is a club service so you can expect to pay a membership fee of  $125 to $150 depending on your choice of bikes and services.  It could cost you around $90 for the Gold Wing, that also depends on your membership status.

 

TRIUMPH LAUNCHES TIGER 800 AND 800XC ADVENTURE BIKES AT THE EICMA MOTORCYCLE SHOW

ATLANTA (Nov. 2, 2010) – Triumph  held the global unveiling of its much hyped Tiger 800 and Tiger 800XC adventure touring models at the internationally renowned EICMA show in Milan, Italy.

The unveilings follow the global introductions of the new Thunderbird Storm, America and Speedmaster at last month’s Intermot show in Cologne, Germany. Triumph’s 2011 model range represents the largest new product offering in the company’s 109-year history.

“Entering the adventure touring segment is big news for everyone at Triumph, and we know from customer comments that they’re just as excited,” said Satu Mehta, Vice President of Sales for Triumph North America. “Triumph’s new adventure motorcycles give us a strong offering in every motorcycle category and a great platform to build on in the coming years.”

The all-new Tiger 800s represent Triumph’s first entry into the mid-capacity adventure touring sector. Powered by a 94hp long-stroke 799cc three-cylinder engine, the two models share the same tough steel frame but have their own distinct personalities.

Designed for the city and open road, the Tiger 800 offers outstanding accessibility and maneuverability with cast alloy wheels and, thanks to the adjustable seat that’s on both models, a seat height as low as 31.9 inches to make it an adventure bike for the masses. The taller Tiger 800XC, meanwhile, delivers true off-road capability thanks to its longer-travel suspension and 21” spoke front wheel. With its higher riding position, the Tiger 800XC provides a commanding view of the road ahead and absorbs even the worst road conditions.

Centered around a three-cylinder 799cc motor, the Triumph Tiger 800 & Triumph Tiger 800 XC make 95hp and 58 lbs•ft of torque, which will likely come as a disappointment for many who were expecting more out of the stroked Daytona lump. Things get worse as the Tiger 800 tips the scales 463 lbs at the curb, while the Tiger 800 XC weighs in at 474 lbs, making both bikes comparatively heavy and underpowered to their middleweightadventure bike counterparts.

On the positive side, both bikes have a adjustable seat height and handlebars, while the Tiger 800 gets a 19″ front rim and the Tiger 800 XC gets a more dirt-worthy 21″ front wheel. Both bikes have an optional ABS package that can be disabled, which will make off-roaders happy, while the 5 gallon fuel tank should make long trips easier for the road warriors, and extend how far into the boonies one can adventure.

Both models come with a wide range of official accessories that are specially designed to help owners get the most out of their machines. High quality soft and hard luggage options as well as optional gel seats with varying heights make these new Triumphs exceptionally capable and inviting touring machines.
