Federal Regulators Issue Fine Against Southern Honda Powersports

1_southernpowersportsThe largest powersports dealer in the nation, Southern Honda Powersports in Chattanooga Tennessee was fined $125,000 to settle allegations that it knowingly sold motorcycles that had been recalled but not repaired.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began a probe of the dealership after USA Today story about the practice.   USA Today said it received information from Ernest Vickers III, a former marketing consultant, hired by SHP, who alledged the dealer sold hundreds, perhaps thousands of motorcycles, ATV’s and dirt bikes that were under recall without first fixing the defective items.

In October,  American Honda said in a statement that it “always has complied with all applicable regulations issued by NHTSA and the CPSC (Consumer Protection Safety Commission), including those related to product safety defects and the conduct of safety recalls.”  Southern Honda’s owner, Tim Kelly called Vickers allegations “utter balderdash” and told USA TODAY that  ”some bikes were delivered” before recall work was performed but that customers were notified and their vehicles were repaired.

NHTSA said it’s investigation found that at least 329 motorcycles were sold between 2007 and 2012 that were not inspected or had their recall defects repaired before customers took delivery.  No injuries or deaths involving those motorcycles have been reported.

The total fine amounts to less than $400 per identified vehicle.

Vickers claims that 25,000 vehicles were assembled unsafely during his 3 year tenure with the dealership.   The NHTSA announcement did not mention or address those claims.

KTM Recalls Dirt Bikes For Faulty Fuel Hoses

KTM is recalling 1,181 EXC-F and EXC models for potential fuel line problems

KTM North America, Inc.’s (KTM) is recalling (1,181 units)  2012 and 2013 350 EXC-F and 500 EXC motorcycles manufactured from September 2011 through August 2012. Due to the supplier’s manufacturing inconsistencies, the preformed fuel hoses may develop cracks or holes at either end. During use, the fuel hoses, located between the fuel tank and the throttle body fuel rail, may allow fuel to leak. The fuel may leak onto the rear tire while the motorcycle is being ridden, increasing the risk of a crash. It is also possible that, in the presence of an ignition source, a fire can occur. KTM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the defective fuel hoses free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin in early December 2012. Largest Honda Dealer in the US Under Investigation

Southern Honda Powersports, the largest Honda dealer with locations in Tennessee and Florida is under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA),  the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Nashville and the Tennessee Attorney General’s Office for allegedly selling unsafe motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles and dirt bikes, according to a report out today in USA Today.    The report says a consultant and former employee, along with 9 other employees all say the dealership sold bikes that were under recall, (without fixing them first) and employees did not have the training to assemble the ATV’s and motorcycles the dealer sold to the public.

The reports says  that there are potentially 25,000 vehicles that are in customers possessions that are potentially unsafe.

The owner, Tim Kelly, says there “is no substance” to the’ allegations, and says alleged assembly problems are “utter balderdash.”

Zero Bikes Dominate Electric Class In 2011 AMA MiniMoto SX COMPETITION

LAS VEGAS (May 9, 2011) – Zero Motorcycles, the global leader in electric motorcycle technology, is celebrating victory this past weekend at the 2011 Geico AMA MiniMoto SX in Las Vegas. On Friday, May 6, Zero set some of the fastest qualifying times among both gas and electric motorcycles. Quick from the start, they dominated the electric motorcycle heat race on production Zero MX dirt bikes. During the race, Zero’s Blake Mitchell took first, followed by Jamie Lanza, Chris Green and Trevor Doniak.Consistently outpacing, out accelerating and out handling the other electric motorcycle competition, Zero showed the strength of their dirt bike line which has evolved to become faster and more robust over several generations. The winner, Blake Mitchell, owns and trains on a Zero X which he purchased in 2008 so that he could gain a competitive edge by riding close to home without disturbing those living nearby.

“Our lap times, success in qualifying heats and speed during the race showcased the performance available today from Zero Motorcycles line of production electric dirt bikes. Adding an interesting twist, during racing and qualifying the electric motorcycles were mixed in with their internal combustion counterparts. In an attempt to level the playing field and capture fans’ attention, race organizers handicapped the electric motorcycles by delaying their start behind the gas motorcycles by several seconds.While entertaining, the top electric motorcycle riders were so much faster than the majority of the combustion field that it caused hazards during passing that resulted in at least one incident. As riders increasingly turn to high performance electric motorcycles it will be the challenge of organizers to decide how best to integrate a new powertrain into a new racing tradition.

Popular Electric Motorcycle Brand Gears Up to Battle Gas Rivals in Las Vegas
