Hall of Fame Supporter Wins 1973 Kawasaki Z1 and 2010 Z1000 in Motorcycle Hall of Fame Raffle

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — When he was growing up in the late 1970s, riding a Kawasaki KZ650, Scott Carey from Pecatonica, Ill., considered the 903cc Kawasaki Z1 the quintessential superbike of its day. Now, 40 years later, the Motorcycle Hall of Fame supporter has his dream bike. Carey won a restored 1973 Kawasaki Z1, as well as a new Kawasaki Z1000, in the 2011 Motorcycle Hall of Fame raffle on Saturday, July 23.

Carey’s winning ticket was drawn by event Grand Marshal and Hall of Famer Jeff Fredette during AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days featuring Kawasaki, Marque of the Year at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

“When I was growing up, the Z1 was the big boy,” Carey said. “I was talking to a friend about getting one just a few weeks ago. And the Z1000, just this spring I was looking at that as a new bike. This is just great. I’m very excited to win both of these bikes.”

Carey said that he donates to the Hall of Fame regularly, and considers the tickets another way of supporting the organization’s mission to preserve the rich tradition of motorcycling in America.

“I really think the Hall of Fame is a fantastic idea,” said Carey. “You never really expect to win these things. It’s good to support the Hall of Fame. It’s something that has to be done. Motorcycling is a big part of history.”

Carey, who competes in amateur roadracing, said that his Z1 — which has been expertly restored by Johnny’s Vintage Motorcycle Company — will probably see a few miles, but, for the most part, “it’s going to be added to the collection and admired.”

While Carey prepares to enjoy his Z1 and Z1000, Hall of Fame supporters can start planning for next year with the newly announced 2012 raffle bike, a stunning 1947 Indian Chief. The Indian Chief is an iconic masterpiece of Americana, representing not just America’s longtime love for big V-twin motorcycles, but riders’ passion for the open road. The winner will be selected at a drawing at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days in July 2012.

Fillmore Wins AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Race at Mid-Ohio

Beck and Wyman Battle Rapp for Podium Spots

Milwaukee (July 11, 2011) – Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Racing’s Chris Fillmore posted a dominant victory from the pole position to win his third AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 race of the season at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course July 10.

 Fillmore lost the lead on a holeshot start by Steve Rapp, and battled with the Parts Unlimited rider for most of the first lap, but after passing Rapp on the second lap of the 11-lap race, he checked out to a substantial gap by the midpoint of the race and eventually built a lead of more than six seconds at the checkered flag.

“I took a look back and didn’t see anyone there,” Fillmore said.  “I expected [Rapp] to be there, so I took a couple more glances then put it on cruise control from there. I got a good launch, got through Turn 1 real well, and was kind of switching up my gearing through the race. I tried some different stuff, but pretty much had figured it out by the third lap.”

While Fillmore cruised to victory and a 30-point lead in the series standings, the racing action was more tense for the second and third spots on the podium, as Rapp began to fade back and was caught first by Michael Beck (J&P Cycles) and Kyle Wyman (Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Racing) to eventually drop to fourth place.

“I got a decent start and was just watching Rapp, [Michael] Barnes, and Fillmore out front,” Beck said. “I kept my head down, got by Barney, and saw Rapp in the distance. I caught Steve and was holding on to him, and I noticed his tires were going off dramatically. I felt like my bike was rolling, and all three of us had a pretty big battle; it was really great. Then both of them made a mistake in the Keyhole, and I was able to take advantage of it and ended up second today.”

“I made a move on [Beck] going into Turn 1–it was a tight, close one, but I got through,” Wyman said. “Then going into the Keyhole, Steve made a mistake right in front of me and I had to check up, and both guys got back past me. I just pushed as hard as I could through the second segment, which is the hardest place to pass. I knew if there was going to be a chance it would have to be coming up in Thunder Valley. I didn’t have the greatest drive, but I tried to get a run out into the inside of the Carousel, but I got out of shape and had to check up again. Then Steve made another mistake and I was able to get a run around the outside of the last corner [and get by him] by maybe six inches or so.”

Rapp finished fourth followed by Tyler O’Hara (Tyler O’Hara Racing) and Michael Barnes (Drag Specialties).

The AMA Pro Racing Vance & Hines XR1200 Series returns to action August 13-14 at Virginia International Raceway in Alton, VA.

AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days to Feature North America’s Largest Motorcycle Swap Meet

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — Motorcyclists know that there are few things cooler than a sweet vintage ride — except for a sweet vintage ride that you pick up for a sweet deal. The hunt for those bargains brings enthusiasts back to the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) vintage swap meet in droves every summer during AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

The July 22-24 extravaganza is expected to be one of the biggest swap meets ever, as hundreds of vendors and thousands of buyers converge at the largest celebration of motorcycle heritage in the country.

“Covering nearly 20 acres of landscape around the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course complex, the swap meet is an impressive site to behold,” said AMA Director of Operations and Motorcycle Hall of Famer Jack Penton. “There are new-old-stock pistons, crank seals, fork boots, wheels, complete running bikes, not-so-complete and not-so-running bikes, shocks, fenders — the list goes on and on.

“This is the place to find that one elusive part you need to finish your prized project, or get started on your first one,” said Penton. “With 2011 shaping up to be one of the biggest swap meets in the history of AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, the opportunities for great deals and great finds will be considerable.”

Penton added that, as a premier attraction for many attendees at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, the AMA seeks to make enhancements every year.

“Last year, we introduced a number of improvements that helped the flow of traffic and better utilized the space for individual vendor displays,” Penton said. “We will continue to evolve those improvements for 2011 to ensure this the best vintage motorcycle swap meet in the country.”

Aermacchi/Harley-Davidson Club to be Showcased as Classic Club at 2011 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days

PICKERINGTON, Ohio – The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is pleased to announce that the Aermacchi/Harley-Davidson Club has been selected as the Classic Club for 2011 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, July 22-24, at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

“Motorcycling history is rich with distinctive relationships that produced some of the most interesting examples of motorcycle technology,” said Jack Penton, AMA director of operations and Motorcycle Hall of Famer. “The Aermacchi/Harley-Davidson line of 1961-1978 certainly fits that description, and we’re pleased to provide attendees of AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days an opportunity to appreciate these special motorcycles.”

The selection of the Classic Club complements the announcement of Kawasaki as the 2011 Marque of the Year for AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days. By honoring a Classic Club, the AMA continues a long-standing tradition of recognizing the many brands that are represented at America’s grandest celebration of motorcycle heritage.

“The legendary Aermacchi/Harley-Davidson Sprint CRTT flat-single racers were born in 1961 when the Italian factory Aermacchi entered into a financial relationship with Harley-Davidson,” said John Basore, who is working with the AMA to organize the Classic Club display. “The union led to the production of 65cc to 350cc street and racing motorcycles for AMA-sanctioned lightweight competition. Craig Vetter Fuel Economy Challenge Coming to AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days

PICKERINGTON, Ohio – Competition breeds excellence, and on July 22 at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, Motorcycle Hall of Famer Craig Vetter will challenge all comers to push the limits of motorcycle fuel economy.

“The goal of the Craig Vetter Fuel Economy Challenge is to discover the least amount of energy — in dollars and cents — it takes to travel the way we really ride,” said Vetter. “The conditions of these events reflect utility and reality, not controlled track conditions. Not only do entered motorcycles have to produce excellent mileage, but they must be comfortable, attractive and be able to carry a reasonable load — such as four bags of groceries.”

As the country’s grandest celebration of the people and machines that define motorcycling’s history, AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days provides a unique backdrop for an event focused on the future of motorcycle design.

“Our goal with these events is to move motorcycle technology forward,” Vetter added. “This is an opportunity for riders to participate directly in that process.”

Vetter said that the route from the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course will be roughly 100 miles, with awards for the overall winner, the best electric bike, and the best performing vintage motorcycle — 1969 model year and older.

“How many times have we heard that the old bikes got great mileage?” Vetter asked. “My Brit buddies are sure their BSA singles from the ’50s and ’60s got 100 mpg. And who knows? Maybe they did. At the AMA Vintage Days Vetter Challenge, we will learn the truth.”
