AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days to Feature North America’s Largest Motorcycle Swap Meet

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — Motorcyclists know that there are few things cooler than a sweet vintage ride — except for a sweet vintage ride that you pick up for a sweet deal. The hunt for those bargains brings enthusiasts back to the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) vintage swap meet in droves every summer during AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

The July 22-24 extravaganza is expected to be one of the biggest swap meets ever, as hundreds of vendors and thousands of buyers converge at the largest celebration of motorcycle heritage in the country.

“Covering nearly 20 acres of landscape around the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course complex, the swap meet is an impressive site to behold,” said AMA Director of Operations and Motorcycle Hall of Famer Jack Penton. “There are new-old-stock pistons, crank seals, fork boots, wheels, complete running bikes, not-so-complete and not-so-running bikes, shocks, fenders — the list goes on and on.

Penton added that, as a premier attraction for many attendees at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, the AMA seeks to make enhancements every year.

“Last year, we introduced a number of improvements that helped the flow of traffic and better utilized the space for individual vendor displays,” Penton said. “We will continue to evolve those improvements for 2011 to ensure this the best vintage motorcycle swap meet in the country.”

AMA National Convention at Americade kicks off in Lake George, N.Y.

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is pleased to recognize the start of Americade, an AMA National Convention, which will run June 7-11 in Lake George, N.Y. Attracting motorcyclists on all types of bikes, especially tourers, sport-tourers and cruisers, Americade offers some of the best riding in the country in addition to a full slate of events and entertainment.

Early American Motorcycle Pioneer to be Inducted into Motorcycle Hall of Fame

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The Motorcycle Hall of Fame is pleased to announce the fourth member of the class of 2011: Norbert Schickel, an innovative designer and builder in the early years of American motorcycle manufacturing.

As the founder of Schickel Motor Co., Schickel was part of the motorcycle design boom that occurred in the United States between 1905 and 1915. He will be honored at the 2011 Motorcycle Hall of Fame induction ceremony as part of the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Legends & Champions Weekend at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas, Nev., Nov. 18-20.

“It’s fitting for the Motorcycle Hall of Fame to reach back 100 years in time and honor one of the true pioneers of American motorcycling,” said Jeffrey V. Heininger, chairman of the American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation, which raises money for the Hall of Fame. “The Hall of Fame honors and memorializes the men and women who have made motorcycling great. And without early pioneers like Norbert Schickel, there would be no American motorcycling.”

Schickel’s vision and designs were evident in the two-cycle motorcycles that he developed. He also helped popularize the twist grip control and had a patented “spring fork front suspension” and “fly wheel magneto.”

Schickel unveiled his first motorcycle at the 1911 Chicago Motorcycle Show, and Schickel Motor Co. began producing motorcycles in 1912 in Stamford, Conn. The company sold more than 1,000 motorcycles, but was forced to file for bankruptcy and close its doors in 1924 due to competition from the automobile industry and other motorcycle manufacturers.

“It was an incredible thrill to learn that he has been selected for the Motorcycle Hall of Fame,” said Ken Anderson, Schickel’s grandson. “He would be thrilled and humbled. If he were here, he would say there are many others who are more deserving.”

Schickel is the fourth member of the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Class of 2011 to be announced. He joins magazine editor and innovator Phil Schilling, industry leader Fred Fox and roadracing champion Doug Polen. The final 2011 inductee will be announced in coming days.

The Class of 2011 will officially be inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame on Nov. 18. Lawmakers Back Ban on Funding for Motorcycle-Only Checkpoints, Want Focus on Motorcycle Crash Prevention

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — Federal lawmakers have sent a bipartisan letter to the leadership of a key U.S. House committee to urge support for a bill that prohibits federal funding for motorcycle-only traffic checkpoints, the American Motorcyclist Association(AMA) reports.

The lawmakers are also urging support for a measure to retain a ban on lobbying at the state level by a federal traffic safety agency.

Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) and his colleagues sent the letter on May 25 to the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure as well as to the panel’s Subcommittee on Highways and Transit.

The letter asks the panels to include H.R. 904 and H.Res. 239 in the surface transportation reauthorization bill now being considered by Congress.

H.R. 904 would prohibit the U.S. Transportation secretary from providing grants or any funds to a state or local government to be used for programs to check helmet usage or to create motorcycle-only checkpoints.

H.Res. 239 would support efforts to retain a ban on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA’s) ability to lobbystate legislators using federal tax dollars and urges the agency to focus on motorcycle crash prevention and rider education and training.

“These important pieces of legislation would ensure that the Department of Transportation (DOT) and NHTSA focus on proven methods of motorcycle safety,” the letter said. “NHTSA’s Motorcycle Law Enforcement Demonstration Program has not proven to be an effective use of taxpayer dollars.

“Through this program, the state of Georgia was provided a $70,000 grant to create motorcycle-only checkpoints to inspect rider compliance with DOT-compliant helmet regulations,” the letter said. “The checkpoints are not a proven method of ensuring motorcyclist safety, and have certainly not been an effective use of limited federal taxpayer dollars.

“We take motorcycle safety seriously and want NHTSA to focus its safety efforts on proven lifesaving methods,” the letter said. “Including H.R. 904 and H.Res. 239 in the surface transportation reauthorization bill would set the record straight, that the House of Representatives supports rider education, driver awareness, training and proper licensing as the best methods of preventing motorcycle crashes, not mandatory federal helmet laws.”

Craig Vetter Fuel Economy Challenge Coming to AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days

PICKERINGTON, Ohio – Competition breeds excellence, and on July 22 at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, Motorcycle Hall of Famer Craig Vetter will challenge all comers to push the limits of motorcycle fuel economy.

“The goal of the Craig Vetter Fuel Economy Challenge is to discover the least amount of energy — in dollars and cents — it takes to travel the way we really ride,” said Vetter. “The conditions of these events reflect utility and reality, not controlled track conditions. Not only do entered motorcycles have to produce excellent mileage, but they must be comfortable, attractive and be able to carry a reasonable load — such as four bags of groceries.”

As the country’s grandest celebration of the people and machines that define motorcycling’s history, AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days provides a unique backdrop for an event focused on the future of motorcycle design.

“Our goal with these events is to move motorcycle technology forward,” Vetter added. “This is an opportunity for riders to participate directly in that process.”

National and World-Champion Roadracer to Join Motorcycle Hall of Fame

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The Motorcycle Hall of Fame is pleased to announce that Doug Polen, a dominant national and world champion roadracer in the late 1980s and early 1990s, will be inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame as part of the 2011 American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Legends & Champions Weekend at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas, Nev., Nov. 18-20.

“Any fan of motorcycle roadracing will remember Doug’s amazing — and dominating — championship runs on the AMA and World Superbike stages,” said Don Rosene, a member of the American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation Board of Directors, which raises money for the Hall of Fame. “At a time when the series saw plenty of fast competitors, Doug was clearly the fastest. And he’s still on the track, racing, teaching and promoting motorcycles and motorcycling.”

Polen had a series of strong winning performances in motorcycle roadracing in the United States and abroad, including winning the Suzuki GSX-R National Cup Championship Series 750cc title in 1986 and 17 of 26 races in the World Superbike Championship Series in 1991, earning the World Superbike title by 150 points. He also was the Japan Formula 1 and Formula 3 National Champion in 1989, AMA 600cc Supersport Champion in 1987 and 1988, AMA 750cc Supersport Champion in 1988, World Superbike Champion in 1992, AMA Superbike Champion in 1993 and World Endurance Champion in 1997 and 1998.

Polen remains active in motorcycling today, running his Doug Polen’s 1 on 1 Riding School (GoPolen.com), featuring radio communications with students during track sessions.

Polen said he was humbled by the honor.

“The thing is that you ride and you race, and when you’re doing it, you’re doing it to have fun and be competitive against other people, but also to try and make a mark and have something you can look back on and be proud of,” Polen said. “This is kind of like putting a stamp of approval, so to speak, on my career, and I take it as a very flattering thing.”

Polen joins Cycle magazine editor Phil Schilling and Parts Unlimited founder Fred Fox as announced members of the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Class of 2011. The rest of the 2011 inductees will be announced in random order in coming days.

Motorcycles Granted Equal Access to Arizona Wildlife Refuge

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge in Arizona has reversed an unwritten policy and is now allowing street-legal motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) on certain roads, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports.

After being alerted by AMA member Keith Dishong that street-legal motorcycles were barred from three public access roads while trucks and other street-legal vehicles were allowed, AMA Western States Representative Nick Haris and Brian Hawthorne of the BlueRibbon Coalition contacted officials at the refuge, which is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Haris noted that the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge Comprehensive Conservation Plan allows street-legal vehicles to use three access roads, so there was no reason to bar street-legal motorcycles and ATVs from those routes.

After investigating, refuge officials agreed.

The officials announced on May 18 that street-legal motorcycles and ATVs are now allowed on three public access roads: the El Camino del Diablo, Christmas Pass and Charlie Bell roads, which are outside designated Wilderness areas. No other roads or trails in the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge are open to motorized use.

“This action does not open the refuge to unrestricted off-road vehicle activity,” refuge officials said in a news release. “Only the three public access roads already open to 4×4 vehicles are open to street-legal motorcycles and ATVs. These vehicles must abide by the same rules and restrictions as all other vehicles that access the refuge.

“Furthermore, permits for accessing these roads are required,” the officials said. “To reduce impact of large caravans, an additional special use permit is required for a party size of five or more vehicles traveling together or traveling in smaller groups but part of a larger organized event. This applies to all vehicles, including motorcycles and ATVs.”

Street-legal motorcycles and ATVs must run a mast displaying an orange flag at least 8 feet above the ground.

As part of ongoing efforts to recover endangered Sonoran pronghorn, seasonal road closures are in effect at the refuge through July 15.

“Land managers at the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge were responsive to our inquiries, and forthright in evaluating their existing policy banning street legal motorcycles and ATVs,” Haris said. “Motorcyclists everywhere can appreciate their efforts.”

The 1,000-square-mile Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge shares a 56-mile border with Sonora, Mexico. Almost all of the refuge is designated as Wilderness, which bars motorized recreation. The refuge features rugged mountain ranges, sand dunes and hardened lava flows.

AMA Racing East Hare Scrambles Championship Series resumes in New Jersey

PICKERINGTON, Ohio – The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Racing East Hare Scrambles Championship Series is set to resume in Port Elizabeth, N.J., this weekend, May 7-8, with a demanding course that features a wide variety of terrain and obstacles, including sand and tight enduro-inspired single-track trail.

“While this spring’s rain and floods have taken their toll, causing the cancellation of round two in Hurricane Mills, Tenn., the AMA Racing East Hare Scrambles Championship is ready to go at full speed this weekend with the Tri-County Sportsmen MC event in New Jersey,” said AMA Racing Off-Road Manager Chuck Weir. “This club does a top job of both running the event and putting together some challenging trail, so we’re confident our racers are in store for a great weekend of off-road competition.”

Factory Husaberg rider and defending AMA Racing East Hare Scrambles Champion Mike Laffertywon the event last year and is excited to return to what he considers his home race.

“This is a tough race, and it can kick your butt if you’re not ready,” Lafferty said. “As motorcycle racers, we’re not just looking for a walk in the park, right? This race is demanding and tough. So if you’re looking for a good physical test, this is your race.”

The course for the 3-hour main event is expected to be 12 miles long. C riders, Masters and Golden Masters racers will compete in a 2-hour race in the morning with a slightly shorter track. Pro payout is $500 for first, $375 for second and $250 for third. All A classes will pay a minimum of $175 to win with payouts back to fifth place. The event is run in cooperation with the East Coast Enduro Association, so competitors earn points in that series, as well.

Series contingency is provided by Wiseco, Pro-X, Vee Rubber, Liquid Performance, Fly Racing and Vortex.

Federal lawmakers oppose state lobbying by safety agency

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) and his colleagues introduced House Resolution 239 on May 2 to retain the ban on state and local lobbying by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports.

The bi-partisan resolution instead urges the agency to focus on motorcycle crash prevention as the first step in motorcycle safety. The date of the bill’s introduction is significant because May is traditionally recognized as Motorcycle Awareness Month. To date, others supporting the resolution include Reps. Ken Calvert (R-Calif.), Walter Jones (R-N.C.), Ron Paul (R-Texas), Tom Petri (R-Wis.), Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), Tim Walberg (R-Mich.) andBarney Frank (D-Mass.).

If approved, the resolution sends a clear message to the federal agency that it shouldn’t lobby state or local jurisdictions for mandatory helmet laws. The anti-lobbying language was originally written into the Transportation Equity Act approved by Congress in 1998. The resolution says the House “supports efforts to retain the ban on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA’s) ability to lobby state legislators using federal tax dollars, encourages continued growth in the motorcyclist community, and encourages owners and riders to be responsible road users.”

The resolution also notes that the House “recognizes the importance of motorcycle crash prevention as the primary source of motorcycle safety [and] encourages NHTSA to focus on motorcycle crash prevention and rider education as the most significant priorities in motorcycle safety.” Sen. Brenner introduced a similar resolution last year.
